Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized the clergy for their failure to speak out against the government’s excessive borrowing and extravagant spending, which he believes are the main causes of the country’s economic challenges.
During a visit to the Bono Region, Mahama expressed his disappointment with the clergy for remaining silent while the government borrowed funds for non-existent projects. He argued that if the clergy had spoken up against the government’s borrowing spree, the country wouldn’t be facing its current economic difficulties.
Mahama also lamented that the clergy’s silence allowed the situation to worsen. On a separate note, the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Rev Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, highlighted the issue of unbridled corruption in Ghana.
He questioned why Ghana, despite being an oil-producer, is still impoverished and facing financial crises. Rev Gyamfi emphasized the need for changes to the Constitution and legal systems to tackle corruption and ensure that the government serves the interests of all Ghanaians.
