Former President John Dramani Mahama has announced a large-scale irrigation project targeting over 100,000 hectares of farmland in Nasia, Dungu, and Bohulu.
The initiative is part of the Northern Savannah Economic Transformation Programme (NSETP), aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and creating thousands of sustainable jobs for young people in the Northern Region.
Speaking at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call by the Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa Naa Abukari II, Mahama said the project will revitalize the region’s agro-industrial potential and drive rural economic growth. The programme is expected to create jobs for over 8,000 young farmers and boost the production of rice, maize, and soya beans.
The project includes plans to develop strategic towns such as Yendi, Savelugu, and Salaga into agro-processing hubs. This will support the value chain and enhance the production of shea and cashew through expanded processing infrastructure and stronger market linkages.
Mahama highlighted plans to invest in the shea and cashew value chains, with expanded processing centers in Tamale and market linkages in Torlon and Sabzirigu. This will benefit thousands of rural women and provide sustainable livelihoods rooted in the traditional rural system.
The Overlord’s visit to the Jubilee House formed part of efforts to strengthen collaboration between traditional authorities and the government in advancing local development and national cohesion. The initiative demonstrates the government’s commitment to working with traditional leaders to drive development and improve the lives of citizens.
