Members of Parliament have expressed their disappointment over the decision made by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to suspend the approval of Ministers and Deputy Ministers of State.
The Speaker announced that the house will not be proceeding with the consideration processes of the ministers recently nominated by President Akufo-Addo.
The move comes after the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, directed parliament to stop transmitting the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill 2021 to the presidency for assent, citing ongoing injunctions on the bill. Speaker Bagbin criticized the Presidency’s refusal to accept the transmission of the bill, stating that it undermines mutual respect for the arms of government.
In response to the Speaker’s decision, the Majority leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, expressed concern over the suspension, describing it as “very strange.” He emphasized the importance of allowing the vetting process for ministers to proceed and for the house to debate and make a final decision on their appointments.
The standoff between Parliament and the Presidency highlights the challenges of cooperative governance and mutual respect between the different arms of government.
Members of Parliament are now calling for a resolution to the impasse to ensure the smooth functioning of the government.
