The statement released by the two says: “We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people that love and care for one another very much, we politely ask for respect of our privacy at this time as we navigate this new phase of our lives,” the statement reads. “Sofía and Joe have been growing apart for a while now and are taking some distance from each other to contemplate their future.”
Vergara in a picture sighted by the platform on the Instagram photo dumps is currently celebrating her 51st birthday anniversary with an Italian vacation without her husband Manganiello and even without putting on her wedding ring.
In another post from her trip, Vergara wrote in her caption, “When life gives u lemons u come to Italy to squeeze them,” seeming to allude to recent personal difficulties.
For his part, Manganiello’s most recent post on Instagram was an illustration showing his support of the actors’ and writers’ strikes. Last week, he posted a simple birthday wish for Vergara alongside a grainy photo of a past birthday celebration, before the news of the couple’s split had been made public.
Manganiello revealed that for their first wedding anniversary in 2017, he wrote a 40-page account of their love story, from courtship to wedding, and bound it into a book for her as a gift. Their wedding the year before boasted some 400 guests, and Manganiello serenaded Vergara with Guns N Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine” at their rehearsal dinner. Vergara, too, publicly gushed about Manganiello, telling Ellen Degeneres ahead of their second anniversary that she was “very lucky.”
“I must have done something really, really right in my life to get that reward,” she said. “I’m good, but not a very, very good person. I’m good, but he’s better than me.”
