MP Ablakwa Announces Demonstration Against Sale of SSNIT Hotels, Accuses Government of “State Capture”

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that a demonstration against the sale of hotels belonging to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) will take place on Tuesday, June 18. Apexnewsgh reports

The demonstration, dubbed “Hands Off Our Hotels Demonstration,” follows Ablakwa’s petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) against the sale of the hotels to Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong.

Ablakwa alleges that the sale of the state properties to government officials is an abuse of power and should be prohibited. He claims to have intercepted documents showing that negotiations to sell 60% of the shares of six SSNIT hotels to the minister’s Rock City Hotel Limited are far advanced.

The MP is seeking relief from CHRAJ, including a full-scale investigation into the sale, which he believes raises fundamental concerns about conflict of interest and abuse of power. He also wants CHRAJ to investigate SSNIT’s conduct and procurement processes, citing numerous violations of due process and unfair treatment.

Ablakwa’s petition further alleges that Minister Acheampong has not obtained the necessary permission from the Speaker of Parliament to hold an office of profit, in violation of Article 78(3) and 98(2) of the 1992 Constitution.

The demonstration has been sanctioned by the police, and Ablakwa has called on supporters to join him on Tuesday, June 18, to protest what he describes as “state capture.”
