In a bid to consolidate party strength and foster unity, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has made significant strides in the Upper East Region. Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, the NDC’s Regional Communication Officer, expressed great optimism following a successful reconciliation exercise conducted by the Regional Executive and the visit of National Chairman Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah to the region.
Salifu highlighted that the reconciliation efforts extended beyond addressing internal disputes among party members alone. The NDC sought to engage influential opinion leaders, regardless of their affiliation, who could provide valuable support to secure election victories. For instance, if a Member of Parliament (MP) was at odds with a Tindaana (traditional leader) in a specific area, the NDC took it upon themselves to reconcile the two parties involved.
It is worth noting that not all of the places visited by the National Chairman were a direct result of the reconciliation exercise.
The Chairman chose to visit certain areas in order to encourage the local NDC members, as exemplified by the visit to Garu. In Garu, where peace already reigned, those who contested in the primaries initiated a “Thank You Tour” amongst themselves, further solidifying their unity.
However, stated that another reason for visiting the Garu Constituency was as a result of the military brutality which occurred late last year in the area. Stressing that Chairman couldn’t have visited the region without visiting the Garu people.
One noteworthy aspect of the recent reconciliation exercise was the opportunity it provided for party foot soldiers to interact directly with the National Chairman. Mr. Asiedu Nketiah ensured that every individual had a chance to voice their concerns, whether at the district, constituency, regional, national, or polling station level. It is important to note that most of the grievances expressed did not pertain to unity since the NDC members already stood united.
Salifu expressed strong confidence in the NDC’s ability to make former President John Dramani Mahama proud in the 2024 general election. The National Chairman’s three-day tour of the Upper East Region served as a reaffirmation of his commitment to party solidarity and the continued success of the NDC.
