The Upper East Communication Bureau of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed deep concern over the delayed commencement of the Limited Voter Registration exercise in the region. Apexnewsgh reports
The Electoral Commission’s inability to generate verification codes for the biometric registration kits has resulted in a five-hour delay, causing uncertainty and frustration among eligible voters.
The bureau emphasized that voter registration is a fundamental right and a cornerstone of democracy, enabling citizens to participate in the democratic process. However, the current setback exposes systemic issues within the Electoral Commission that threaten the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
Reports from all 15 constituencies in the region indicate that technical glitches and administrative oversights at the EC headquarters are responsible for the delay. The inability to generate verification codes has brought the registration process to a halt, leaving prepared registrants frustrated and potentially disenfranchised.
The bureau warned that this delay could lead to deliberate disenfranchisement, particularly in NDC strongholds, and highlights broader issues with electoral management under the Jean Mensa-led EC.
They urged the EC to address these issues, ensure transparency and accountability, and extend the registration period to accommodate the lost time.
The NDC remains committed to advocating for a fair and transparent electoral process and will continue engaging with stakeholders to address these critical issues and protect Ghana’s democracy.
