No Public Holiday on August 4, 2025: Ministry of the Interior Clarifies

In a recent statement issued on Thursday, July 31, the Ministry of the Interior announced that Monday, August 4, 2025, will not be recognized as a statutory public holiday.

This declaration follows the recent legislative changes concerning the observance of Founders’ Day in Ghana.

Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had previously established August 4 as Founders’ Day to commemorate the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), an event many view as a pivotal moment in Ghana’s path to independence.

However, the landscape shifted when Parliament, led by a majority from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), passed a bill in June that reinstated September 21, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s birthday, as the official Founders’ Day. Nkrumah, regarded by many as the architect of Ghana’s independence, is now honored on this date.

As a result of this legislative shift, the Ministry of the Interior has urged the public and organizations across the nation to prepare for a regular workday on August 4, emphasizing that public activities will continue as usual.
