The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced the disqualification of 11 candidates for the upcoming parliamentary primaries scheduled for January 27.
The party did not disclose the specific reasons for the disqualifications. Evans Nimako, the Director of Elections, spoke at a media briefing in Accra, emphasizing the party’s adherence to its constitution during the vetting process.
He acknowledged the potential for human judgment errors and assured that the party is committed to conducting a transparent and fair vetting exercise. Nimako mentioned that individuals who feel aggrieved by the vetting outcomes can appeal through the National Parliaments Appeals Committee.
Initially, around 400 people obtained forms to participate in the NPP parliamentary race, with 373 undergoing vetting. Out of this group, 11 candidates were disqualified, 326 were approved to contest, and two cases were referred to the National Executive Committee for further action. Additionally, two aspirants withdrew voluntarily, 29 candidates went unopposed, and one application was incomplete due to failure to fill out the required forms.
Furthermore, two aspirants did not appear before the vetting committee. The January 27 election will be held in constituencies where the NPP currently has sitting Members of Parliament (MP), as parliamentary primaries have already been conducted in orphaned constituencies.
