Following the neglect and the ignorance of some men toward their pregnant wives, it has become necessary to educate husbands on the importance and benefit of accompanying their wives to antenatal or weighing before and after birth. Apexnewsgh.com
A staff Midwife at the Bolgatanga Health Center Patience Ayamga said another way a husband can show love and care to the pregnant wife is by accompanying her to the hospital for a check-up.
She added: “It encourages the women the more when they see that their husbands are supporting them. They need support at this time because there is some growth in them which is making them experience a lot of discomforts.
So, if they see that there is support coming from their husbands, they feel comfortable, they don’t even feel they are carrying something. She stressed
“And when the men follow their wife to the hospital facility, whatever education that is going on, we don’t do it alone with the pregnant woman, we also let you the man participate to enable you to have knowledge on how to support your wife back home. So, is very important for men to follow their pregnant wives to the hospital. She advised
Samuel Apot a general nurse at Regional Hospital said, in this part of the world /Africa and for that matter Ghana, research has made him receive diverse views about Husbands allowing their wives to visit the hospital alone.
According to him, “some will tell you is their culture and in their culture, if a man is following the wife to Antenatal they see it in a certain way and some will even tease you by asking whether you are the one who is pregnant or your wife?.
“So, we are trying to demystify that by letting them know that pregnant women really need their partners. So, in the region, I think what the region is trying to do as a way of encouraging the men is by way of attending to their wives more quickly. Such a move is just to tell others that if your wife needs your support.
Another thing is, when they follow their wife to antenatal, there are things the pregnant woman might not remember, but the husband will be able to remember it”.
Meanwhile, we met Mohammed Gazari a teacher who accompanied the wife for antenatal at the Bolgatanga Health Center. Per his explanation, The reason why he always accompanied his wife to the hospital for weighing is because of the stress and the pain she goes through.
“Sometimes, I accompanied her just to hold the baby”.
“I think the workers here encourage me to always follow her to the hospital. They always tell me that whenever I followed my wife to the hospital, they are always encouraged because there are some things they need to explain to me as a husband when we accompany them.
However, things are done quickly for us”.
