In the recently held elections for the Municipal and District Assemblies (MDAs) in the Upper East Region, only the Bawku West District was successful in electing a Presiding Member (PM) after the inauguration of the newly elected Assembly Members.

The elected PM, Hon. Awini Zakaria Assana, secured 39 votes in a second round of voting, defeating his contender, Hon. Azaaba A. Williams, who received 10 votes.

Reports indicate that the remaining 14 MDAs in the region were unable to elect their PMs. Addressing the issue during a national address delivered on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu, emphasized the importance of decentralizing governance to the local level in accordance with the Constitution.

Hon. Yakubu highlighted the need for citizens to recognize that certain developments lay within the jurisdiction of the District Assembly, rather than solely relying on the national level for progress. He urged the Assembly Members to actively contribute to the deepening of local governance and decentralization processes, ensuring that basic public services are easily accessible to all citizens in their respective districts.

The Minister stressed the importance of continuous capacity building and sensitization of citizens regarding decentralization and Ghana’s local governance system.

He noted that the Assembly Members were inaugurated at a time when the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization, and Rural Development was making efforts to enhance the mobilization of Internally Generated Funds (IGF).

Hon. Yakubu encouraged the Assembly Members to collaborate with one another and explore innovative means of mobilizing resources to facilitate development within their areas.
