Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), praised his party’s commitment to providing portable water across Ghana. He expressed his confidence in the party’s ability to address the crucial need for water in the Navrongo Central constituency in the Upper East Region.
During the commissioning of a borehole constructed by the Navrongo Parliamentary Candidate, Simon Aworigo Akibange, Mr. Nketia highlighted the importance of water and its role in bringing life to communities. He referred to the PNDC and NDC’s track record of prioritizing water provision, which helped to eliminate Guinea worm disease during the PNDC period.
Mr. Nketia acknowledged the efforts of past NDC presidents, including President Prof. Mills and President John Dramani Mahama, in continuing to focus on water provision. He emphasized the need for consistent attention to water pollution throughout different administrations to achieve the goal of water for all.
Engaging the media, Mr. Simon Aworigo Akibange, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for the Navrongo Constituency, announced that he has started fulfilling the borehole promises he made during his campaign. During the commissioning of a borehole in the Doba community, Mr. Aworigo addressed the issue of water scarcity in his constituency, particularly in rural areas.
He expressed concern about the impact of this problem on women and children, who spend a significant amount of time fetching water instead of engaging in productive activities.
“It is a rural constituency and as many of them, water has always been a challenge. It takes away the time of our women, for young pupil to be in school, they spend most of the day carrying water for household activities, whereby women who should be spending productive time engaging in something that will bring income to the house will always go looking for water. It is the reason why when I was going round campaigning during the primaries, it came up and very strongly that they needed water and I felt that it is important I begin by providing that water I promised will do. In fact, this is an ongoing programme and it is not stopping now”. He stressed
Recognizing the urgent need for water, he pledged to continue implementing his promise to provide boreholes in the constituency. This project consists of multiple phases, with the first phase consisting of 16 boreholes.
“It is just the first phase of 16 of them, there is a second phase that is going to be roll out soon. The phases are not finished until we cover every part of the constituency that needs water in Navrongo central”.
He emphasized the importance of clean water in preventing waterborne diseases and ensuring the health and well-being of the community. Furthermore, he criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for making empty promises and asserted that the NDC has a track record of delivering on its commitments, both in government and as an opposition party.
Community members present at the commissioning could not hide their excitements. They told Apexnewsgh that they never thought of getting a borehole because it has been ages of water struggle in the community without help from the assembly or any NGO. The extends their gratitude to the NDC Parliamentary candidate for his kind gesture.
However, as Oliver Twist, they were asking for more.
Meanwhile, the National Chairman was said to have been in the Upper East region for a reconciliation exercise.
