Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed disappointment in President Akufo-Addo for not addressing the struggles of thousands of residents of Mepe and surrounding areas in the Volta region during his recent State of the Nation Address.

These residents were severely affected by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, which occurred months ago.

Ablakwa highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the displaced residents who continue to rely on private donations for survival, as the government has not provided any support in resettlement, compensation, or livelihood assistance. He criticized the President’s silence on this issue, deeming it as insensitive towards the suffering of the affected communities.

In an interview with Class News, Ablakwa condemned the lack of government intervention, calling it “shocking,” “unconscionable,” and “unacceptable.” He emphasized that the displaced residents are in need of support and assistance to rebuild their lives after the devastating flood waters destroyed their homes and farms.

Approximately 30,000 residents were displaced by the dam spillage, with the Volta River Authority justifying the action as necessary to prevent a collapse of the dam. However, Ablakwa believes that the government should take responsibility for supporting these displaced individuals and providing them with the necessary resources for recovery.

As the affected communities continue to face challenges, Ablakwa is urging the government to prioritize the needs of these residents and to take immediate action to address their plight.
