On Thursday, the usually quiet premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra were transformed into a scene of fervent support and anticipation.
Scores of fans of dancehall superstar Charles Nii Armah Mensah, better known as Shatta Wale, gathered outside the EOCO building, demanding the immediate release of their idol following his detention over alleged breaches of tax compliance.
The tension began on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, when Shatta Wale was taken into custody as part of EOCO’s ongoing investigation into luxury vehicle ownership and tax compliance in Ghana. The focus of the inquiry, as later clarified, centered on the tax obligations tied to Shatta Wale’s yellow Lamborghini and certain aspects of his business dealings.
News of his detention spread rapidly, sparking an outpouring of support from fans and industry insiders alike. The following day, the crowd outside EOCO’s offices swelled, with supporters chanting for his freedom and waving banners adorned with the artist’s image.
Amidst the speculation and swirling rumors on social media, Shatta Wale’s media manager, Samuel Atuobi Baah (widely known as Sammy Flex), took to social media to address the situation. In a live video, Sammy Flex assured fans that Shatta Wale’s legal team and management were actively working to meet the bail conditions set by EOCO. He urged the public to disregard unfounded rumors, emphasizing that the inquiry was strictly related to tax matters concerning the luxury car and not other issues being discussed online.
EOCO has since confirmed that Shatta Wale has been granted bail set at GH₵10 million, with two sureties required to be justified, pending the fulfillment of all legal procedures. For now, Shatta Wale’s supporters remain hopeful, keeping vigil and awaiting the artist’s release as the legal process unfolds.
