The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has added its voice to the growing demands for the resignation or dismissal of Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame. Apexnewsgh reports This follows a leaked phone conversation in which Mr. Dame allegedly pressured Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the ongoing ambulance case, to implicate Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson. ASEPA’s Executive Director, Mensah Thompson, condemned the Attorney General’s actions, stating that they undermine efforts to promote social equality, prevent human rights violations, and ensure justice. The organisation expressed disappointment at the silence of the Ghana Bar Association and the Presidency, urging them to take a stance on the matter. Dr. Ato Forson, a former Deputy Finance Minister and current Minority Leader, is on trial for his alleged involvement in procuring faulty ambulances for Ghana. The case has sparked public debate, with many demanding Mr. Dame’s resignation over his conduct. ASEPA emphasized that the Attorney General’s actions have damaged Ghana’s reputation, undermining the trust of international organisations that provide substantial support to civil society organisations (CSOs) and governmental agencies. “We are, therefore, adding our voice to the many voices calling on the AG to resign or be sacked by the president… The AG’s conduct has undermined the steady progress we have made in these areas of key interest to our development partners and the international community at large and therefore deserves nothing but utter condemnation from all, including the Bar Association and other stakeholders of the judiciary.” The organisation warned that the silence of the Ghana Bar Association and the Presidency would further dent the country’s image. “It will be a further dent on the image of the country if the Bar Association never finds its often skewed ruthless voice in this ongoing spectacle; everyone is watching.” Source: Apexnewsgh.com Thanks for reading from Apexnewsgh as a news publishing website from Ghana. Mensah Thompson of ASEPA granted bail
Mensah Thompson, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) who was arrested and detained by the Police has been granted bail on Thursday, 10 February 2022 Mr. Thompson was granted bail of an amount of GHS50,000 with two sureties. He was detained at the Teshie Police station in Accra on Wednesday, 9 February 2022. According to a report available to the media, he is facing charges for the publication of false news after alleging that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo together with his daughters used the presidential jet in December 2021 for family purposes. Meanwhile, the custodians of the Presidential jet, the military have denied the allegations as false. However, the ASEPA founder later withdrew the publication and apologize. “In the same medium I made the earlier publication, I withdraw the publication pending an official response from the GCAA. I unreservedly apologize to the Ghana Armed Forces if their image was in any way affected by my publication. “We shall put out for your consumption the response to our request from the GCAA records of the Falcon 900-EX,” a statement issued by ASEPA noted. According to Police Prosecutor, Inspector Ebenezer Tei Okuffo told the Kaneshie District Court that Mr. Thompson’s post had the potential of inciting the youth against the president’s family.
ASEPA boss detained by police
Executive Director of anti-graft civil society organisation, Alliance For Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA), Mensah Thompson, has been detained at the Teshie District Police Command and charged with the publication of false news. Mr Thompson was promptly detained when he went to the police station upon their invitation. The police have said that his detention is pursuant to a complaint by the Ghana Armed Forces that Mr Thompson had allegedly published false news against it. He will be put before the Kaneshie District Court on Thursday, February 10, 2022. Background In January, Mr Thompson alleged that family of the President had travelled with the Presidential Jet, which is operated by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), to London for shopping in December 2021. “So between the 20th and 30th of December, 2021..during the Christmas, the children of a close relative of the President took Ghana’s Presidential Jet the Falcon EX jet on a trip to the UK just for Christmas shopping. They didn’t go alone, they went with their friends and partied in the sky all through the trip, taking snap videos and flaunting their lucky adventure. “Ghana has spent close to half a billion dollars in the last two years renting private jets for our President, whiles his family members continue to lavish in our rejected aircraft at the expense of the poor tax payer. “The Ministry of National Security, the Ghana Airforce and the Civil Aviation Authority would have to provide answers to the good people of Ghana why a national security asset like the Presidential jet was left at the mercy of spoilt youngsters who went partying around the world playing in Ghana’s Presidential jet, creating an international diplomatic spectacle embarrassing the country Ghana.” But just before the GAF released its statement denying the claim, he wrote again that “I have had an extensive conversations this morning with the PRO of the Ghana Armed Forces pursuant to the usage of the Presidential jet by the children of the relatives of the President. “In the same medium I made the earlier publication, I withdraw the publication pending an official response from the GCAA. I unreservedly apologise to the Ghana Armed Forces if their image was in anyway affected by my publication. We shall put out for your consumption the response to our request from the GCAA records of the Falcon 900-EX.” GAF issued a statement denying the allegations and reported the matter to the police, who invited Mr Thompson. “We wish to state without any equivocation that the said publication is untrue, frivolous and without any basis. We additionally wish to state that the said aircraft has not been to Europe for a very long time and this publication is therefore a figment of the authors imagination. These allegations can easily be verified since there is always a task order for the movement of all Ghana Air Force platforms. “We believe that this unfortunate publication which has been circulated widely is a calculated effort to undermine the image of the Ghana Armed Forces in the eyes of the general public. More disturbing is the fact that whilst the GAF is focussed on its mandate of protecting the territorial integrity of the country against serious external and internal threats, others are working very hard to distract us from our core mandate. “We are calling on all Ghanaians, especially politicians once again, not to drag the GAF into any partisan politics. The Ghana Air Force platforms will continue to be used for the interest of all Ghanaians including its traditional role of maintaining fighter ground attack capabilities and providing close air support during operations, as well as providing transport support to the Ghana Armed Forces. We will continue to provide surveillance over the air space of Ghana and over the Exclusive Economic Zone of the country. “In view of the seriousness we attach to such malicious publications, the issue has been referred to the Inspector General of Police for further investigations.” Mensah Thompson rendered an apology for publishing the falsehood about the Ghana Armed Forces. I’m shocked ASEPA’s hearsay and rumour petition to remove CJ received this much attention – Lawyer Anyenini
A private legal practitioner, Lawyer Sampson Lardi Anyenini says he is shocked the petition by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) to have Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah removed traveled that wide. ASEPA few weeks ago petitioned the Presidency and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the CJ after a Lawyer Akwasi Afrifa fingered him in a US$5million bribery allegation. Although CHRAJ took up the matter and starting investigations, it has through a letter to ASEPA noted that it won’t continue with the probe. Making reference to another petition file by ASEPA to the office of the President for the impeachment of the CJ, CHRAJ says it will not want to crisscross the work of the committee set up to look into the matter. “Since the matter is pending in the appropriate constitutional forum, the Commission, in exercise of its discretion under Section 13 of Act 456, hereby ceases to investigate the complaint any further as the invocation of the Article 146 proceedings has effectively taken the matter out the forum of the Commission” part of the Commission’s letter to ASEPA has said. ASEPA’s petition to the President to remove the Chief Justice over allegations of the $5 million bribe has also been thrown out on Monday, August 23. After receiving a report from a committee that looked into the matter to find out if there was a prima facie case, President Akufo-Addo said the petition lacked basis. The report concluded that ASEPA’s petition for the removal of the Chief Justice on the grounds of “stated misbehavior” is “frivolous and vexatious”, “does not meet the prima facie standard envisaged under Article 146 (6) of the Constitution and thus, ought to be dismissed in limine”. Having monitored the development in the media and the report of the committee, Lawyer Sampson Lardi Anyenini has shared his thoughts on ASEPA v CJ matter. According to him, he is shocked the petition travelled this length and received this much attention when it was only based on rumours and not facts. “I have just done a quick read through a 12-page (+cover letter) prima facie determination on the petition for removal of the CJ. It supports my prediction and professional expectation,” a post on the Facebook post of Lawyer Sampson Lardi Anyenini has said. It continues, “But I am sincerely shocked it got this much attention – 12-pages?! If article 146 impeachment were to be reduced to such a joke, which liable office-holder will have any space to work? “All anybody needed to do will be to file a petition based on nothing but rumour and hearsay without supplying a scintilla of evidence in support. “Put yourself in that place where someone simply throws words on paper accusing you of misconduct or crime and that is the only basis for you to be put on trial. “You may google up my article on the article 146 process.” —Modernghana Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. ASEPA gives AG 48-hour ultimatum to initiate criminal investigations against Health Minister
The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) has threatened to file an official petition at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service (GPS) if criminal investigations are not initiated to prosecute Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu. This comes after a report of the ad-hoc committee of Parliament set up to investigate the circumstances leading to the procurement of the Sputnik V vaccines by the Health Ministry through a middleman. While ASEPA commends the committee for the work done, it says it believes the work of the Committee but its report wasn’t particularly thorough. Insisting that the adverse findings made by the Committee are already issues Civil Society, experts, and well-meaning Ghanaians have already raised in the public domain, ASEPA says is giving the Attorney-General 48 hours to initiate criminal investigations against the Health Minister. Failure to do so, ASEPA says it will formally file an already prepared petition to the CID to compel the AG to do the needful. “A petition has been already prepared together with all relevant documents including the report of the ad-hoc committee of Parliament awaiting to be filed within the next 48 hours at the CID if the Attorney General fails to initiate the relevant legal processes against the health,”. Produce the report on abduction, torture of ModernGhana journalists — ASEPA to National Security Ministry
The Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) is through the RTI Law asking the National Security to produce the report of investigation it initiated on the arrest, detention and torture of ModernGhana journalists two years ago. Modernghana’s Editor Emmanuel Ajafor in June 2019 in a Rambo-style was picked up by National Security operatives together with a reporter. After his release, he revealed how he was tortured during interrogation amid slaps, handcuffing and tasered. The National Security Ministry denied the allegations but said it was going to probe the allegations which it denied in the same statement it issued. Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah at the time said Government was awaiting internal investigations by the National Security before officially commenting on the matter. “…To the extent that we are having a number of discrepancies in the story that is being told, the primary agency to determine if these accounts are correct or some standard operating procedures or person’s rights were breached is the National Security Council Secretariat. Obviously, they may have to do their own internal enquiry to establish the truth or otherwise of the matter and make a determination of the next step. There isn’t much that has come out and I want to believe that it is an ongoing exercise and if they find anything untoward, then it can be escalated to the next level. ” “For all these agencies, you start off from an internal enquiry. It is when the preliminary feedback that you are getting from that enquiry does not make sense and then you escalate to the next level…From what I have, their internal enquiry has not ended and that is why they have requested the medical report validation. In the end, we all have a better understanding of what happened”, he told Citi FM. Next month will be two years since National Security started its investigations and nothing has been said about it creating room for doubts regarding the probe on Citi FM’s Caleb Kudah assault by the same National Security secretariat. ASEPA has invoked the RTI law to request a report from the National Security on the outcome of their investigations. “We write to you pursuant to the Right to Information Act 989, 2019, to request from the Ministry of National Security, a copy of the report of the investigations carried out by the National Security on the alleged abduction and torture of two Journalists from Modernghana, an online news portal here in Accra,” part of an official letter from ASEPA to the National Security Ministry reads.
