Former president and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama, has recently embarked on his Building Ghana Tour, which includes a visit to Bawku in the Upper East region. One of the highlights of Mahama’s visit was his meeting with Bawku Naba, Zug-raan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, the paramount chief of the Kusaug traditional area. During the meeting, Mahama urged the Bawku Naba and the local community to support the NDC in the upcoming December 2024 election. Expressing his disappointment over the neglect of various projects initiated during his administration, Mahama specifically mentioned the Garu Hospital and the Bawku to Bolgatanga road. He assured the residents that if elected, the NDC would not only complete these abandoned projects but also initiate new ones. One significant promise made by Mahama was the construction of a state-of-the-art referral hospital in Bawku. Addressing the pressing security and safety concerns in Bawku, Mahama emphasized that there is no chieftaincy conflict as there is only one known king, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II. He urged the people to work together with the security agencies to restore peace in the region. Mahama reassured both the chiefs and the community that restoring peace in Bawku would be a top priority for his administration. He emphasized the need for collaboration and pledged to work towards fostering lasting peace in the area. Bawku Conflict: Inviting the two overlords for a peace talk will stop the killing
Alhaji Sumaila Issaka, the Chairman of the Upper East Regional Peace Council, says inviting the Paramount Chief of the Bawku traditional area Bawku Naba, Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, and the Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga in a one on one peace talk by the National Peace Council will bring a lasting solution to the unfortunate killings in Bawku. Apexnewsgh.com report The Regional Peace Council Chairman shared this opinion during an interview with Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen of Apexnewsgh.com on Thursday, December 22, 2022. “The Mampurusis have Nayiri as their overlord, he speaks and what he says is final, the Kusasis have Bakwu Naba as their overlord when he speaks whatever he says is final. I think should be able to get these two for the National Peace Council to sit them down. You see, what I have also noticed is that there are some particular persons in both palaces what they say is also final, they kind of speak for the two chiefs. Whatever, Bawku Naba said, there are certain persons in there who must have spoken to him earlier, and the same in Nayiri Palace. That’s my opinion though”. He stressed He further said, “Even though I know they are fixed with their decisions, I mean where they want to go, if we get them to sit down, I know certain facilitators that can work on them for them to see reasons why people are dying in Bawku. Maybe just because is not affecting them directly by their own children they are not seeing anything wrong with that. And if we are able to work on the two chiefs or kings with these two major speakers and some youth leaders that is where we will get the issue”. Making reference to the earlier invites of the two overlords by the President, He said “There was a saying that President Nana Akufo-Addo invited the two overlords sometime back and had discussions with them separately. Now, we are not privy to what was discussed, because whatever we are going to say now is hearsay because of the reaction after that particular meeting. Background The first main conflict among the two ethnic groups in Bawku, the Kusasis and the Mamprusis, over who was the rightful custodian of the area erupted in 1983 during the Samanpiid Festival celebrated by the Kusasis to signify a bumper harvest. In 1984, the conflict re-ignited again, that time over the ownership of farmlands. Subsequent conflicts occurred in 1985 during the Samanpiid, in 2000 during the general election, and in 2001 and 2007, also during the festival. Aside from these major conflicts, there have also been pockets of deadly skirmishes between the two factions over the years. The disturbances have led to the loss of lives and properties, while many people have sustained varying degrees of injury in the process. The Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee (IEPC), comprising Kusasis and Mamprusis, was inaugurated in 2009 to work towards the restoration of peace to Bawku. The IEPC was charged with the responsibility of opening up genuine, constructive, and effective dialogue among all the people of Bawku, especially the major protagonists in the conflict. Even though the committee became dormant for some years, it was reconstituted in 2015. Meanwhile, the area continues to witness some continuous sporadic disturbances, with the latest incident occurring this month and leading to the loss of lives and property. UER: Bawku Naba Calls On Indigenes To Study Kusaal Language
The Paramount Chief of the Bawku Traditional Area, Zug-Raan, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, says the peace in the area can only be sustained under mutual understanding and co-existence. In a speech read on his behalf, at the 33rd annual Samanpiid festival of the chiefs and people of the area, the Paramount Chief commended the key actors in the peacebuilding process, “These include the government that initiated the formation of the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, the Municipal and District Assemblies in Kusaug, the security personnel and civil society groups including the Belim Wusa Development Agency (BEWDA). He also thanked Star-Ghana for its support. He said all the stakeholders played various roles to reinforce the peace efforts before, during, and after the just ended Presidential and Parliamentary elections to the surprise of skeptics about the fragile peace in Bawku. He said the elections ended well and thanked the people for taking part in the process in a peaceful manner, adding “The existence of many political parties does not mean we should divide and destroy our unity. It only allows us to choose development.” According to the Paramount Chief, peacebuilding was not an event, but a process, saying “Given that, I urge all to come together with the mutual understanding that will help us to co-exist peacefully in the traditional area so that collectively, we can help develop Bawku.” He urged all in the area to put their political differences behind them and strive to unite to develop the traditional area in peace. The Zug-Raan thanked the outgoing and incoming Members of Parliament for the area for their contributions to the area over the years and urged them to work together for continuity and the development of Kusaug as one people. He reminded the people of the area that the Chieftaincy institution was noble and admonished all Chiefs to desist from partisan politics of any kind, as any negative attitude in that respect was likely to polarise their communities and plunge them into conflicts which would deny them the development they so desired. “I wish to also use the opportunity to call on my Chiefs to handle land disputes in their communities very well and ensure that the poor are not denied the rightful ownership of their lands.” Naba Azoka II thanked the government for its development programmes and policies and appealed for the completion of all township roads in the Bawku Municipality, and the construction of by-pass roads as early as practicable before the rains set in. The festival was on the theme: “Mutual understanding, and co-existence; A key to enhancing peace for the development of Kusaug.” —GNA Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications.
