NDC Primaries: Garu Constituency and what the outcome is likely to be after counting of ballot

Garu constituency is one the constituencies in the Upper East Region taking part in the 13th May 2023 National Democratic Congress (NDC) primaries to elect both Flagbearer and Parliamentary Candidate.  AlbertAkuka Alalzuuga: The Incumbent Mr. AlbertAkuka Alalzuuga, Dr. Thomas Winsum Anaba, and Mr. George Akudugu Mbawini are all battling for a single parliamentary seat in the Garu constituency. Mr. Alalzuuga became the DCE from 2013 to 2016. He won the primaries in 2015 and subsequently became the MP in 2016. In 2019, he won the primaries and also emerged winner of the 2020 elections. As an MP, he has led the party for 8years. Meanwhile, contribution-wise, he has done some things that gave him the opportunity to become the candidate and subsequently become the MP in the 2020 election. Things he has done in the constituency with his Common Fund include, assisting some students in terms of their school fees, and drilling some boreholes. Etc However, what we have also gathered has it that, his message to delegates is centered on completing the project he started as an MP. The incumbent Mr. Alalzuuga is currently riding on his existing achievements Dr. Thomas Anaba: Is the former Medical Director for the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, who was sacked by the NPP shortly after they assumed office. Dr. Anaba contested the 2019 primaries but couldn’t win. However, after the primaries, Dr. Anaba subsequently supported the Incumbent MP to win the 2020 election. His contribution to the party is also recognized, in the 2020 election, he supported the party and the incumbent with 5 motorbikes and some printed T-Shirts. He is a party financier in both constituency, regional, and national. He is also a member of the party manifesto committee. Our observation in the constituency shows Dr. Anaba’s message is centered on improving the lives of the people of Garu, especially farmers. He thinks as the constituency is divided into zones, he would use his loan V8 loan to purchase tractors for farmers at various zones to enable them generate income from their farming activities. His message is penetrating deeply and might be able to do the magic for him. Mr. George Akudugu Mbawini: Is a Chartered Accountant, he contested the last primaries in 2019 and came 3rd. Despite losing the primaries, just like his colleague contender did by also throwing his support to the incumbent MP Mr. Alalzuuga, the same was done by Mr. Mbawini towards supporting the MP in the 2020 election. He also gave the party 5 motorbikes with some T-Shirts. However, our visit to the constituency also shows, Mr. Mbawini is focusing on providing portable drinking water to the people of Garu. He has assured delegates that when given the opportunity, he will purchase a wreck to help the constituency with continuous borehole drilling in every corner of the constituency. His message is also welcoming to delegates. However, his popularity in the party cannot match that of the incumbent and Dr. Anaba Our Prediction From the information we have gathered so far in Garu, the incumbent MP is facing a tough battle with his contenders. Views gathered by delegates says, he has been in position for 12 years, 4 years as a District Chief Executive (DCE) and 8 years as a Member of Parliament, and yet not much development is witnessed in the constituency. Majority of those we engaged believes, is time to give opportunity to a new person to examine the difference. If nothing changes from now till Friday night, Garu is likely to have a new NDC parliamentary representative in the name of Dr. Thomas Anaba For the Flagbearership, John Dramani Mahama will get over 87.5 percent ahead of his other contenders Dr. Kwabena Duffour, a former Minister of Finance and Mr. Kojo Bonsu, a former Mayor of Kumasi will share the rest of the votes. NDC GARU: No unity between former MP, current MP, and Dr. Anaba’s supporters. I am the Unifier– George Akudugu Mbawini

An Aspiring Member of Parliament in the Garu Constituency Mr. George Akudugu Mbawini has described himself as a unifier ahead of the 13th May party Parliamentary election in the Constituency. According to the Chartered Accountant, during the last Constituency elections, he was the only person who did not come out with a team or put a candidate to contest the current executive. “I stand as a unifier, I bring unity to marshal the unity towards the general election. I bring about a new paradigm shift that will bring everybody on board”. He said Speaking to Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen in an exclusive interview on Monday, April 17, 2023, Mr. Mbawini revealed that there is no peace in the party: “Currently, the party is divided between the former MP Azimbe, Dr. Anaba, and the current MP. Azimbe’s supporters are very peeved because of the current MP Alalzuuga. Dr. Anaba came out with his team to contest the constituency executive and they lost and they are on a different side”. “What am looking for in the constituents, is what the MP is not doing. We have a problem with good drinking water, people traveled from miles to get access to water, farmers into animal raring don’t have water rare their animals and these are the things am bringing onboard”. Mr. Mbawini further said that the current MP’s slogan is that,” his father is not there, meaning NDC is not in power but I also think we can think outside the box to make sure that though his father is not there, he thinks outside the box and we know other constituencies like the Tempane, for instance, the lady is able to dig boreholes, every community people have access to water, those who are farmers they have access to water to do their farming. So, why being an MP two times and you are still complaining that your mother is not in the kitchen? And the Tempane who has been there once is able to provide all these things”. “We think that he is not connected enough, he is not well positioned to be able to lobby outside the box, and with my experience as a chartered accountant for several years, I have worked in the both public and private sector with over 22 years’ experience and I do believe that I have that connection that I can help get help outside the central government support”. He stressed The aspiring candidate further told Apexnewsgh, that will bring on board the competency his constituents are looking for.
