IMF expected to be in Ghana shortly.

An official team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to arrive in Ghana on Wednesday, July 6 to begin negotiations with government on the economic support it is seeking. The IMF officials – comprising senior officers from the Fund and local staff – will meet the Finance Ministry, the Economic Management Team and the Presidency during their stay, according to reports. Among other reasons, their visit to the country would largely involve deliberations on the modalities for a package to support Ghana’s ailing economy. It is expected that details of the bailout programme and its conditionalities will be made public after several engagements.

Dr. Duffuor faulted government for its inaction regarding the low wages of workers

A leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has faulted the government for its inaction regarding the low wages of workers as “a betrayal of the loyalty and service of workers. According to Dr. Duffuor, “May Day is an opportunity to celebrate the tireless work of the men and women whose labor sustains our nation”. Meanwhile, in a solidarity message published on his official social media handles to mark the 2022 May Day celebration of Ghanaian workers, Dr. Duffuor praised Ghanaian workers for sustaining the nation and called for economic justice to prevail in ongoing labor agitations for better working conditions. He said, “On days such as this, it is important that we reflect on the contributions of workers to our national development, but it is most essential that we seize the opportunity to stand in solidarity with our labor force and on the side of economic justice”. “In a country where productivity does not equate to real wage, we breed a culture of labor theft and unrest. Workers deserve wages commensurate to their hours of labor. But at a time when inflation continues to rise yet our last salary increment was 4% in 2020, real wages have drastically lost their value”. However, Ghanaian public sector workers are currently demanding a 19.4% increment in wages equivalent to the rate of inflation but the government has so far not yielded. You sent 1000 soldiers to look for me? Papavi asked government

leader of Western Togo land secessionist, Papavi Kormi Kudjordjiem, has broken his silence following violent agitations by some groups pushing for the creation of Western Togoland. Speaking from his hideout in a video gone viral, Papvi condemned the state’s search for him. “I remember we once went for a meeting, we closed, and I went into another meeting. I was attending meetings here and there, peaceful meeting meetings here and there. At the end of one, I was informed that several soldiers, heavily armed, were chasing after my name. Rumours even had it that I should be brought either alive or dead. “I have made myself available to the police, security agencies on several occasions. Anytime they wanted me, I went, and we had discussions, and I come home. But this time, I don’t know why over one thousand young men were holding guns looking for an 85-year-old man. I don’t know what they have in mind about me, so I had to hide my face a little,” he said while explaining his decision to go into hiding. A group suspected to be members of the Homeland Study Group Foundation, a group demanding to secede from Ghana blocked roads, leading to the Volta and Oti regions, including Kpong-Akosombo, Juapong-Ho, Ho-Mepe, Sogakope-Accra. The separatists attacked two police stations at Aveyime and Mepe. They seized ten AK-47 assault rifles after breaking into the police armoury. They ransacked the police stations, released inmates in custody, physically assaulted and injured police officers. Just four days after this violent attack from the group, another act of vandalism was recorded. This time, the group, also believed to be members of the secessionist group turned their focus on the State Transport Corporation (STC) in the Volta Regional capital, Ho. According to the police, four armed men stormed the transport terminal Ho STC yard demanding the keys to all the vehicles parked. The armed men set two minibuses ablaze when the drivers failed to produce the keys to the eleven buses which were parked there. They also beat the drivers in the process. A flag believed to be that of the Western Togoland secessionists was found at the scene. But reacting to these disturbances perpetuated by suspected members of the group, leader of the foundation, Papavi said the government of Ghana must thoroughly investigate the matter. According to him, his group is a peaceful one and does not operate with violence. “It had come to my attention that about a week or two ago, there was the blocking of roads, a sort of a demonstration, mayhem in the land (Volta Region). The homeland Study Group is a peaceful group. A peace-loving group. A peace generating group which started since 1994.” “I am advising strongly that our people, the government of Ghana, should take that letter published online seriously and go by it. I have on two occasions written to the President of Ghana for us to sit down and talk at a round table but no attention has been given to the letter. He added “Nobody should label the Homeland Study Group Foundation with this kind of thing. We are not like that. Ghana should intensify its level of investigation and not just suspect and arrest people, firing people and locking people up”. Before going into hiding, Papavi on November 16, 2019, declared a Western Togoland independence from Ghana at Ho in the Volta Region. “Today the 16th of November 2019, the leader of Western Togoland independence Mr Charles Kormi Kudzodzi has announced the separation of Western Togoland from Ghana. He sighted numerous reasons as the bases for which the union that was not established must not be recognized. More information will soon reach the General public soon,” the group wrote on Facebook. The government must cheap politics and address the Western Togoland issues adequately -Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

Member of Parliament (MP) for the North Tongu Constituency Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said government has failed Ghanaians by not showing any good interest in dealing with the recent threats of secessionist groups in the Volta Region. Mr. Ablakwa made the remarks in an interview with Accra based Citi FM monitored by Apexnewsgh.com. According to him, the government and the ruling party are rather engaged in “cheap politics” instead of acting conclusively on the matter. The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, John Boadu at a press conference on Monday, September 28, 2020, said it expects the NDC and the other political parties to condemn the recent disturbances caused by some persons believed to be members of a secessionists group in the Volta Region. But Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said, the call by Mr. John Boadu is needless and untrue especially as the NDC had already done that earlier. “It was in January this year, and we publicly denounced and condemned the activities of these separatists.” Ablakwa further added that residents in his constituency, which also experienced the chaos created by the group, are currently living in fear. “What has happened in my constituency, we are all living in fear. Never in the history of my constituency and our region has a police station been overpowered where police officers are overpowered and rather put in cells and suspects freed. Never have armories been broken into,” the legislator said. Members of the secessionist group, Homeland Study Foundation, on Friday, September 25, 2020, blocked major entries into the Volta Region. The action is said to have taken place at dawn, leaving travelers to and from the Volta Region, particularly areas such as Tefle, Tsopoli and Juapong stranded. The group reportedly burnt vehicle tyres and took control of two police stations, freeing suspects and taking weapons from the armory. And also at dawn on Tuesday 29th September 2020, a group of people suspected to be members of the separatist group advocating for independence from Ghana for the Western Togoland state has attacked the State Transport Corporation (STC) in the Volta Regional capital, Ho, and set ablaze some of the buses. One person was later reported dead while security officials were firing guns to try and restore order to the area. 31 peoples have been arrested in connection with the incident have since been charged and currently being held in custody. Meanwhile, the police have given assurances that they are in control of the situation and will do their best to arrest the rest of the perpetrators of the crime to ensure that they face the law.
