41,000 ghost names consumed ¢400m of taxpayers’ money – Bawumia
Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia has revealed that Ghana has lost GHS400 million of taxpayers’ money to some 41,000 non-existent names on the payrolls of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) as well as the National Service Scheme (NSS). He said: “14,000 ghost names were recently found at the National Service because there was no unique identity”, Dr Bawumia said, adding: “Just a couple of days ago, SSNIT found 27,000 ghost names, and they were being paid GH¢327 million”. “Just these two institutions have cost us over GH¢400 million”, he observed at the 2021 Civil Service Awards Night in Accra. Dr Bawumia said the Ghana card, thus, presents the best opportunity to get rid of ghost names on payrolls. He, therefore, insisted that he would choose the card over 1000 interchanges. “It seems my Ghana card statement was misinterpreted. I want people to think about it critically. For the first time in our history, we have a unique identity system which is biometric, and, so, we can identify individuals.” “With this, the case of ghost names on our public sector system will become a thing of the past.”
Navrongo: NSS Secretariat accused of extorting money from service personnel
The officials of the National Service Scheme (NSS) Secretariat in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality have been accused of extorting money from NSS personnel undertaking their 1 year mandatory national service in the municipality. According to some aggrieved service personnel, NSS personnel in the municipality are made to pay an amount of GH¢5 before their monthly evaluation forms are received and endorsed by officials of the municipal NSS secretariat. Personnel who refused to pay the amount being demanded are said to have had their forms rejected and risk not receiving their monthly allowance of GH¢559. This comes on the back of demands by service personnel for an increase in the monthly allowance paid to them. NSS personnel are currently paid an amount of GH¢559 as monthly allowance. But this, the personnel argued, is not enough to match up to the rising cost of living in the country. They have, therefore, appealed to government to consider increasing their monthly allowance so as to enable them meet their basic needs. NSS personnel in the country have not seen an increase in their allowance for the past 4 years. The allowance was increased from GH¢350 to GH¢559 in April, 2017 and has since remained unadjusted. —Dreamsfm Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications.
