Albert Sore Declares Bid for Upper East Regional GJA Chairmanship

Albert Sore, the Upper East JoyNews Correspondent who doubles as the current Upper East Regional GJA Secretary, has officially announced his intention to contest for the position of Upper East Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). Apexnewsgh reports After careful consideration and encouragement from colleagues and members of the GJA in the region, Sore has filed his nomination documents and undergone vetting for the June 30, 2025, National and Regional Executive Elections. The current Regional Chairman, William N. Jalulah, is not seeking re-election due to his new role with the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) in Accra. Sore, who has served as Regional Secretary for the past three years, believes his experience and dedication make him an ideal candidate to lead the branch forward. Sore’s vision for the Upper East Regional Branch of the GJA is built on six key pillars: 1. Building on the gains made under Chairman Jalulah’s leadership to make the branch one of the most vibrant and visible in the country. 2. Establishing a Regional Secretariat for the GJA. 3. Building partnerships to enhance member capacity, especially for those with limited experience. 4. Initiating programs to increase the number of active and excelling female journalists in the region. 5. Creating a structured welfare system to support journalists in emergencies. 6. Significantly increasing GJA membership in the region. As Regional Secretary, Sore has played a key role in the success of the outgoing Regional Executive. He drafted proposals for funding the Regional GJA Awards and helped organize capacity-building training programs and public lectures. Under his leadership, GJA membership in the Upper East Region has grown from 16 active members in 2022 to nearly 50 active members presently. Sore thanked members and executives of the GJA in the Upper East Region for their support and pleaded for their continued backing in the upcoming elections. He promised to release a detailed policy document outlining his vision and plans for the region soon. Source: Apexnewsgh.com/Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen

William Nlanjerbor Jalulah, General Manager of A1 Radio, was sworn in as Upper East Regional Chairman for the GJA. Speaking to the media after the brief ceremony, the Regional Chairman of the GJA, Mr. Jalulah reiterated his promise to make the Association more attractive to journalists in the region. “Over the years, the Association has not been so attractive to members or journalists. As a result of that, our number is not encouraging. The information I had before the interview was scanty, I therefore render my sincerest apology– Affail Monney

Roland Affail Monney, President of the Ghana Journalists Association has apologised for his earlier comments on the assault of Citi FM journalists Caleb Kudah and Zoe Abu Baidoo Addo by National Security operatives last Tuesday. “I therefore render my sincerest apology for any misimpression created that I was insensitive to the plight of the two journalists but excited about the excesses of the National Security operatives.” Mr Monney was reported to have said Caleb Kudah broke the GJA Code of Ethics because his motive was not clear. But his comments were roundly condemned by many including some executives of the GJA. Affail Monney at a press conference today indicated that he only spoke on scanty information at the time of the incident. “On Wednesday, 12th May, 2021, around 5:40 pm I granted an interview at Kumasi Airport to Joy FM. Admittedly, the information I had was sketchy. So I reluctantly went ahead to speak to the issue. I began by instinctively and profoundly expressing my tenderest solicitude to and fullest solidarity with the two journalists. Indeed, I faulted Caleb whom I thought was “openly “ filming a video at the Ministry of National Security before his arrest.” He indicated that his comment about the alleged assault on Caleb Kudah was overhyped to spark an agenda against him. “Unsurprisingly, my condemnation of the office invasion and physical brutalisation was muted while my comments on Caleb’s ethical style was tilted and overly highlighted obviously to achieve certain sensational ends. “As a student of leadership, I have learned that a leader is not afraid to change course when confronted with fresh information which challenges earlier assumptions.” Read full statement below: STATEMENT BY AFFAIL MONNEY AT A PRESS CONFERENCE ON MOLESTATION OF CITI FM REPORTERS AT GHANA INTERNATIONAL PRESS CENTRE ON 14TH MAY 2021 Good morning colleague journalists, distinguished ladies and gentlemen. Please accept my deepest gratitude for responding to the invitation to attend this morning’s press conference which will last not more than five minutes. I am holding it in my personal capacity as a Senior Journalist and a resident of No 4 Puma Street, Adentan, Accra. This press conference is principally to set the records straight and share a few comments on the raging storm over the molestation of two Citi FM reporters, Caleb Kuda and Zoe Abu Baidoo Addo. On Wednesday, 12th May, 2021, around 5:40 pm I granted an interview at Kumasi Airport to Joy FM. Admittedly, the information I had was sketchy. So I reluctantly went ahead to speak to the issue. I began by instinctively and profoundly expressing my tenderest solicitude to and fullest solidarity with the two journalists . Indeed, I faulted Caleb whom I thought was “openly “ filming a video at the Ministry of National Security before his arrest. I , however , added pointedly that the alleged ethical breach did not , and , does not justify the inordinate use of force and intimidatory tactics against the poor journalists. I roundly condemned the “ massive” invasion of Citi FM premises by security operatives to scale up the degree of intimidation against the entire staff and management. I again said that the response by these security operatives was totally out of proportion to the so called offense by Caleb. It clearly violated the law of proportionality. Unsurprisingly, my condemnation of the office invasion and physical brutalization was muted while my comment on Caleb’s ethical style was tilted and overly highlighted , obviously to achieve certain sensational ends. As a student of leadership, I have learned that a leader is not afraid to change course when confronted with fresh information which challenges his earlier assumptions. As I indicated, the information I had before the interview was scanty. What is available now is sufficient, as legal luminaries , distinguished ethicists and social critics slice and dice the issue from all angles. It is healthy for a free society such as ours for viewpoint diversity to be manifestly venerated, not maliciously castigated. I also take note of the righteous indignation and emotional overdrive over the issue. I, therefore, render my sincerest apology for any misimpression created that I was insensitive to the plight of the journalists but excited about the excesses by the National Security operatives. Indeed, those excesses pass for wickedness at its most naked nastiness. And I totally denounce them. Under my presidency, attacks or threats against journalists ,irrespective of the perpetrators or victims , have received outright condemnation. So there is no way the latest ones against the Citi FM journalists will be swept under the carpet. Not at all. Indeed, the ordeal as narrated by the journalists is heart rending, soul wrenching, mind boggling, and earth- shattering. The intrinsic value and inherent dignity of the two as human beings were blatantly violated. Their freedom as journalists, too, was scandalously abused. The misbehaviour of the national security operatives can exert a significant chilling effect on the media landscape as a whole. This must stop. In view of this, I urge the Committee of Enquiry set up by the Ministry of National Security to quickly move into action to impartiality unravel all the circumstances surrounding the issue. The findings and recommendations should also be implemented with urgent promptitude to give meaning to our motto as a land of freedom and justice. The Lord is our refuge and strength. We opened an office in Accra for the coordinated mechanism for the safety of journalists—Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has told journalists in the Upper East to take advantage of the newly opened office of the Coordinated mechanism for the safety of journalists. According to Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, the office was an additional layer, aside from many other interventions, to demonstrate the government’s commitment to press freedom and the safety of journalists. “Just yesterday, we opened an office in Accra for the coordinated mechanism for the safety of journalists. Because, as we continue to hear reports that XY and Z journalist has been intimidated or attacked, it is important that we respond. And responding is not all about arguing with journalists but is by putting in place a mechanism that can do a number of things 1, received reports properly so-called of attacks and intimidation on Journalists”. “I have been a journalist about 10 years before I became a lawyer and came to politics and I know that, it is only when journalists are free and are operating in an environment where they feel no intimidation that they are able to work well and provide for us the service of public information for our public good that we need”. “So, when we keep hearing these reports, they are worrisome and the best way to respond is to put in place a mechanism that allows us to receive formerly those reports. So, is not my allegation, your allegation or what somebody says. Certainly, these reports can be validated. They can go into it and look at it and make an interpretation that it is true. Because, you and I know that have been instances in this country where people have claimed that they have been attacked and is totally untrue, and there have been instances where people claimed they have been attacked and is true. But is important to separate the weed from the chaff. And not just to validate, to go the next step of following up in a coordinating way to find out what has happened to the investigation on this matter and has the person responsible for this particular reported attack or intimidation been sanctioned, then we can satisfy ourselves as a country that something substantial has been done or has not been done”. “Also, a place where we can continuously provide the necessary education to journalists and other stakeholders on how to protect ourselves.
