MTN Bright Scholarship beneficiaries graduate with flying colours

Three beneficiaries of the MTN Bright Scholarship, who pursued various degree programmes at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), have graduated with flying colours. Adinani Dikono, who pursued BSC Accounting and Finance, Solomon Ofori Kwafo, BSC Actuarial Science and Ebo Krampah, BSC Accounting and Finance all graduated with Second Class Upper during the 13th Congregation of the University in Accra. Solomon Ofori Kwafo made MTN Ghana proud by emerging as the Best Graduating Student of Actuarial Science. The three were among the first batch of 100 scholarships awarded in 2018 to students in public tertiary institutions. The three graduate beneficiaries of the scholarship programme thanked MTN Ghana for investing in their future and promised the telecom company board, management, and staff that they wouldn’t disappoint them. “Without the MTN’s scholarships, most of us would have deferred our courses due to financial difficulties,” they said. Adinani Dikono, who hails from a village in the Upper West Region, said he was fortunate to have had the support of MTN Ghana to complete his course. He appealed to the telecommunications giant to continue to help needy but brilliant students achieve their dreams in life. “I consider myself lucky coming from a village in the Upper West Region, and I believe a lot more people will need the help of MTN,” he added. MTN Bright Scholarship was initiated in 2018 to fulfil a commitment MTN made to Ghanaians during the commemoration of its 20th Anniversary in 2016. So far, 300 scholarships have been awarded to students in public tertiary institutions across the country for 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2020/21 academic years. The Scholarship provides badly needed financial assistance to needy and brilliant students in public tertiary institutions. It covers the cost of tuition, accommodation, a stipend for books and other relevant reading materials for the entire duration of their studies. —myjoyonline Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Government payroll is full, 60% of revenue paying 650,000 people – Ofori-Atta

The Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has informed the 2021 graduating class of the University of Professional Studies-Accra (UPSA) that the government’s payroll is full – making it unsustainable to keep adding to employment figures in the public sector, hence the need to create their own jobs. According to him, the government’s role is to create the needed enabling environment, establish micro-stability and ensure that citizens have the right skill set – and that is what the government is going to do: focus on the youth and budget for their demands. “The future for you in regard to jobs is the most important thing for you at this stage, and we have gone through a period when most people look for a job from government or state institutions, but that payroll is full. “I can tell you that because we are spending about 60 percent of our revenue on renumerating some 650,000 people, and that is not sustainable,” he said. The finance minister further indicated that entrepreneurship, skillset and credit are the important things needed in the mix to ensure sustainability for the youth and offer them an opportunity to create their own path to wealth. According to the minister, education is a ladder to social mobility as well as economic and social prosperity, offering beneficiaries the opportunity to help society – adding that it is important for the graduates to acknowledge the privilege of accessing four years of tertiary education and do their best to impact society through the transformation and renewal of their minds. Chief Executive-Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Dr. K.K. Sarpong, in his address at the graduation ceremony, emphasized that it is important for the graduates to acquire 21st-century skills and core competencies which will enhance their employability and advancement in career. He emphasised that, currently, industries search for graduates who have more than a university degree, as they consider life-skills such as creativity, innovation, critical-thinking, collaboration, teamwork, communication, empathy and digital literacy, among others, as essential skills for effective individual performance. “These life-skills underpin the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that aids in dealing effectively with the challenges of everyday life, particularly work. It is therefore important that graduates acquire life-skills as mentioned,” he said. Dr. K.K. Sarpong further singled-out digital literacy and indicated that this is an era of digitisation wherein automation, artificial intelligence and the use of software has dominated the delivery of accounting and financial services, hence the need for them to equip themselves with these skills to stay relevant on the job market. He further stated that outsourcing of functions such as procurement, payroll, taxation, pensions and benefits, recruitment and training has become a new normal under COVID-19, hence the need for them to respond swiftly to that trend. “I encourage you to set up your own firms to tap into the growing outsourced financial and business services. Be entrepreneurial, for your training here has given you what it takes to do that,” he said. The Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Prof. Abednego F.O. Amartey, indicated that for the 2020/2021 cohort UPSA is graduating a total of 3,640 students – comprising 793 postgraduates, 2,054 undergraduates and 793 diploma students. He entreated them to be worthy ambassadors of the school, exhibiting the values and tenets imbibed in them. “As a marketer, my parting words to you are remember these four Ps – be positive, principled, proactive and productive,” he said. —thebftonline Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. I was not given fair hearing – Prof. Alabi responds to Auditor-General’s report

Former Vice Chancellor of the University for Professional Studies (UPSA), Professor Joshua Alabi, has disclosed that he was not contacted to respond to the Auditor-General’s report which made adverse findings against him and demanded that he refunds over GHȻ264,000 to the university. The Acting Auditor-General, Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu, in the audited report of public boards, corporations and other statutory institutions ending December 2019, directed that Prof. Alabi be made to refund the money which was expended in the procurement of legal services between 2014 and 2017 without evidence of work. “We noted during our review that, Management of UPSA, Accra, signed a retainer agreement dated 16th March 2014 and paid an amount of GH¢263,670.00 to Lithur Brew and Company a law firm as a retainer fees without evidence of the provision of any legal services to the University. We advised that, the former Vice Chancellor; Prof. Joshua Alabi and Lithur Brew and company be made to refund the amount with an interest at the prevailing Bank of Ghana interest rate”, the report said. But Prof. Alabi says the Auditor-General’s work was a done in a shoddy manner without regard to fair hearing. “In the first place when you do an audit and someone has questions to answer, you need to let the person know so that the person can respond, when you’re not satisfied, then you can come out with your report, I believe that’s what’s supposed to be done”, he told 3FM’s Dzifa Bampoe in an interview aired on Hot Edition. Asked if he was not given an opportunity at all to respond to the audit, he said “I was not consulted, so I also called Mr. Tony Lither to find out because he has also been asked to pay part of the money, it was also news to him”. He said Tony Lither was duly contracted as solicitor for the university and he worked as such. According to him, all the documents are available to show that he worked including representing the university in court on a number of cases. 3news Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications.
