Talk and Do Ablakwa Introduce 24-Hour Passport Service Amid Overhaul of Passport System

In a bid to tackle the backlog of passport applications, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced plans to introduce a 24-hour passport service. Apexnewsgh reports

This initiative is part of a broader effort to revamp Ghana’s passport system and streamline the application process.

During a tour of the passport head and regional office in Accra, Mr. Ablakwa revealed that the passport administration will operate 24 hours a day, with three shifts running throughout the year. This move aims to significantly reduce the waiting time for passport applications, which currently stands at three to four weeks.

To achieve this goal, the Minister outlined five key action plans, including measures to decentralize services and establish decent passport application centers in every region. The ministry is also expanding its data centers and improving facilities at its headquarters to support the new system.

In addition to the service extension, Mr. Ablakwa hinted at a possible reduction in the passport application fee. Currently, a standard 32-page passport costs GH₵500.00, a fee that the Minister believes is too expensive for ordinary Ghanaians. He pledged to reexamine the cost structure and ensure affordability, especially for underprivileged groups.

The proposed fee reduction will not apply to business professionals and entrepreneurs who require premium services, as they can afford the current charges. However, certain groups, such as brilliant but needy students on scholarships, may be eligible to acquire passports for free.

Mr. Ablakwa’s announcement reflects his commitment to improving efficiency in passport processing and enhancing the welfare of the service staff. With these reforms, Ghanaians can expect a more streamlined and efficient passport application process.
