A young police sergeant with the Upper East Regional Police Command has allegedly set a rented compound house of his formal girl lover ablaze over a misunderstanding.
One Sergeant Senaya Saviour a police officer with the Upper East Regional Police Command is reported to have set the house at Tanzui where his lover and her aunt rented as tenants ablaze on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, following a misunderstanding in their relationship.
According to a report by dreamzfm, the police sergeant had gone to the house in the night of Saturday, November 21, 2021, to confront the young lady only identified as Eunice following the lady’s refusal to pay him a visit after allegedly receiving money from him for transportation.
The police officer reportedly banged doors and windows, demanding entry into the room to confront her. His demand, however, fell on death ears, infuriating him to destroy the room’s window. He returned the next day under the guise of fixing the window but made away with Eunice’s belongings after gaining access into the room.
Later in the night that day, he went to Eunice’s aunt’s pub located around Junior Staff demanding to see her but to no avail. The police officer, who is said to be in possession of a gallon of liquid suspected to be petrol at the time he went to the pub, then returned to the house around 1:40am and allegedly set the compound house on fire in the belief that Eunice had returned home by then.
The fire reportedly started from Eunice’s mother’s room and subsequently spread to 5 other rooms occupied by other tenants and the landlord, destroying them completely. It took the intervention of the fire service to douse the flames.
The police officer was, however, not satisfied with the havoc he allegedly caused. About 5 days after the incident, the drinking spot operated by Eunice’s aunt was also set ablaze.
The aunt, who spoke to this news portal, indicated that she has reported the matter to the police. She added that preliminary investigation by the fire service established that the fire was ignited with petrol.
“We were at the shop when somebody called that the house was on fire. We invited the fire service and they came around and did their investigation and said somebody poured fuel, that they suspect arson. And the fire started from my room. The house isn’t mine, I’m only a tenant. Many rooms were completely destroyed. I went to the police station and lodged a complaint. Since that day up to now, the police is not telling me anything. All they keep telling me is go and come,” she said.
The distraught woman narrated that she had advised her niece to break up with the police officer as she was uncomfortable with their relationship. Eunice heeded to her advice and subsequently, indicated to the officer that she was no longer interested in continuing with the relationship. He, however, did not take it lightly as he threatened to make life a living hell for her if she does not rescind her decision to break up with him.
“I advised her to stop her relationship with the guy. The guy happens to be a police officer. So she told the guy that she was no more interested in the relationship. Now, the guy didn’t understand why my niece said she doesn’t want him again. Before even the fire last night, the guy had called my niece, telling her that ‘since you said you don’t want me again and that you cannot stay with me then you can’t be with any other person’,”
Meanwhile, the landlord, this news portal gathered, has also lodged a case of arson with the police against the officer.
However, the victim Madam Fustina Aboba commended the Regional Police Commander Sayibu Pabi Gariba for his swift reaction after the incident was drawn to his attention.
His said, the suspect sergeant was arrested and later granted bail. She is optimistic that Police is on top the issue to bring justice to bay.
