Politics is deeper than jostling for power. Likewise, a political party is more than a platform for winning elections. The spirit of every age is externalized through its politics. The “gods” who are in control of a people’s destiny are manifested through the political associations that the people embrace. When a local people welcome and mainstream a foreign political ideology, they have inadvertently welcomed a foreign “god” to guide the affairs of their domain .
In 2012, Nigeria joined a global socio-political movement known as “the Occupy Movement”, and domesticated it through the ” Occupy Nigeria ” protests aimed at chasing out the then President Goodluck Jonathan from office. Governor Nasir El-Rufai was part of the organizers; and they coerced the ordinary man in the street to join with the call for government to bring down the pump price or petroleum.
What many did not know was that they were actually involved in a global movement known as ” Occupy”. It was an international populist socio-political
movement that expressed opposition to social and economic inequality and to the lack of perceived “real democracy” around the world. It aimed primarily to advance social and economic justice and different forms of democracy. Its prime concerns included how large corporations (and the global financial system) control the world in a way that disproportionately benefits a minority, undermines democracy and causes instability.
It was never about Nigeria nor about the PDP. It was planned in America as “US Day of Rage”, but later advertised as “Occupy Wall Street” which took place on September 17 2011 in New York, with more than 1000 protesters in downtown Manhattan walking up and down Wall Street. Due to its success, on 15 October 2011 global protests were announced and staged around the world. By the end of 2011, protests were carried out in about 1000 cities, including Paris, Tokyo, Taipei, Sydney, Hong Kong, Hamburg, Leipzig, and many others. By January, 2012, with the call to stop the removal of fuel subsidy, it successfully berthed in Nigeria.
However, the hidden truth is that there is a spirit behind the Occupy Movement which is neither Nigerian nor African. The philosophy for the global movement was supplied by the Zeitgeist Movement. The Zeitgeist Movement is an activist movement started in the United States in 2008 by Peter Joseph. The group is critical of market capitalism, describing it as structurally corrupt and wasteful of resources. The group dismisses historic religious concepts as misleading, and embraces sustainable ecology and scientific administration of society. In other words, it is both anti-establishment and anti-religion. And without any mainstream political structure, it could be described as nihilistic. This is why the Occupy Movement nearly set the world on fire.
Commentators have described the Zeitgeist Movement as “conspirituality” – that is a synthesis of New Age spirituality and conspiracy theory. A particular term used by one of the social thinkers is “apocalyptic cult”. It is interesting to note that the narratives spawned from this movement have eventually enriched the political arsenals of populist political ideologies.
Therefore, as the globe is presently faced with new existential challenges, we need political ideas and platforms that carry the spirit of the age. Society is dynamic, and we cannot depend on yesterday’s suggestions to solve today’s problems.
The Ascension Movement is the brand new political force for this dispensation. The word ZEITGEIST means “spirit of the age”, an invisible agent or force dominating the characteristics of a given epoch in world history.
In a season of upheavals and deep-seated universal anxiety, the spirit of the age is now PEACE. We also have a local challenge. In an atmosphere of poverty, opacity and corruption, the emerging force is INTEGRITY, TRANSPARENCY and INNOVATION (production). But these solutions cannot come in a vacuum. They must be carried by a requisite midwifing force – Political Party.
The truth is that we are now in the Age of Ascension; and we need a political party to embody this Zeitgeist. None of the present political parties have this spirit. Indeed, the American Zeitgeist Movement saw the vision of the future, but it came at the wrong time. This is why we are here – in the right place at the right time. We have the God-given capacity to engender prosperity for Nigeria and Africa, and World Peace for all global citizens.
