Information Minister Designate and Spokesperson for the Legal Team of the Second Respondent in the Presidential Election Petition, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah believes the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been stripped naked during Monday’s hearing of the case. According to him, the Petitioner, Mr John Dramani Mahama and his witness, Johnson Asiedu Nketia who is affectionately called ‘General Mosquito’ were “exposed” in their inconsistent claims challenging President Nana Addo’s victory in the December 7, 2020 polls. His comments comes after counsel for the second respondent, Mr Akoto Ampaw ended cross examining Mr Asiedu Nketia Monday afternoon [February 1, 2020]. Mr Oppong Nkrumah told the media after the hearing that Mr Mahama and Johnson Asiedu Nketia were left with eggs on their faces in their preconceived attempts to dishonour the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) and Returning Officer for last year’s Presidential Elections, Madam Jean Mensa. “You’d notice that counsel on our side spent a lot of time exposing the inconsistencies and sometimes, even outright falsehoods that have been put out by the Petitioner and the witness who was in the witness box today,” “We are of the view it’s been a very good day in court that today the big word is exposed. In conclusion for us today, our view is that, if your case is bad, even the most skilful general will be exposed at cross-examination and that is what we believed has happened today…. “….when you juxtapose the earlier case of we won, now to what they are saying in the witness box, about they don’t know who won, when you juxtapose that to some of the tapes we played about claims of 51% of their side now, to claims that they did not even bring numbers to court, “If you juxtapose that between their petition that talks about vote pardon of a certain answer and now claim that it’s only samples of that number, one of the first things that come to our side was to expose some of the inconsistencies and falsehoods that have been peddled by the Petitioner and the witness,” he said. Meanwhile, the case has been adjourned to Tuesday, February 2, 2021 where the second witness of the Petitioner will take his turn in the witness box for cross-examination. Earlier in the day and moments before the court ended today’s sitting, the panel of judges sought further clarity on certain responses by the witness during cross-examination. The questions came from Justice Yaw Apau and the Chief Justice, His Lordship Anin Yeboah. Perhaps it became pertinent for the bench to seek the clarifications because during cross examination by Mr Akoto Ampaw counsel for the second respondent, the NDC General Secretary as a witness, was non-commital on providing the figures in relation to the total valid votes cast saying that was not the case in court. It was on that basis that the bench decided to probe further. Who Generated “Exhibit”? Below are some of the excerpts of the questions and answers from Justice Apau and Mr Asiedu Nketia Justice Yaw Apau: What were the valid votes cast in favour of the petitioners? General [Mosquito – in referene to Mr Asiedu Nketia alias], I know that when you purchase a pen drive, it is empty and the data on any pen drive is generated by someone, so the pen drive that you attached to the hard copy and exhibited as “Exhibit F”, who generated or placed the data on it? Because when you were asked, you said you don’t know what was on it. who generated the data on the pen drive?” Asiedu Nketia: “My Lord as I said, honestly, I hadn’t seen the pen drive and its contents till today [February 1, 2021] and I was relying on the hard copies. But the evidence is gathered by our Elections Directorate and the Legal Directorate.” Justice Apau: “So they gave it to you and you exhibited it as part of your evidence?” Asiedu Nketia: “No, no my Lord, I did not exhibit that one.” At that point, the counsel for the petitioner, Mr Tsatsu Tsikata intervened and said Mr Asiedu Nketia did not exhibit that and that it was part of the petition. But the justices on the bench responded and insisted Mr Asiedu Nketia exhibited it as “Exhibit F” as part of his witness statement. “You [Tsikata] swore an oath for him and he brought it to us [bench]”, Mr Tsikata was told by the court. Justice Apau: “He exhibited it, so I want to find out, who generated it? So it means your Elections [Directorate] generated it and gave it to you and you exhibited it without seeing it? Asiedu Nketia: “My Lord I did not see all the hard copies of the documents because of time pressure. I was discovering this thing today.” Justice Apau: “Then I want to be very clear on these issues, very, very important to me. Now, in all the figures that were mentioned as the valid votes cast and all those things, you were saying if the figures were correct, and that there were inconsistencies in the figures. I want to ask you, Now, in your own calculation, what were the valid votes cast in the presidential elections on 7th December 2020, in your own calculations?” Asiedu Nketia: “My Lord, those calculations are reserved for a meeting for us to reconcile the figures, because the first respondent [Electoral Commission Chairperson] herself is changing the figures, and so it is …” But the Chief Justice, Justice Anin Yeboah then barged in and tried to simplfy matters for the witness: “Mr Asiedu Nketia, please help the court. You see, when you started giving evidence, you said you had all the representatives across the 275 constituencies, you said you put agents there and they were to, I mean collate the figures, you said it. Then he is asking you, that from that, what figure did you get, you?” Asiedu Nketia: “My Lord I haven’t brought that figure to court.” Justice
There is a possibility of lockdown, if this trend continues–Kojo Oppong Nkrumah
Kojo Oppong Nkrumah the Information Minister-designate, has said that if the Coronavirus infection in Ghana continues, the President is likely to lockdown the country for better. Ghana has recorded over 3,280 active cases of the coronavirus as of Monday, January 25, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the death toll is now 367. Meanwhile, the country has recorded a total of 60,794 cases with 57,141 recoveries and discharges. Addressing the media on Monday, January 25, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah said “There is a possibility of a lockdown and other restrictions. If this trend continues, then yes that is where we are heading. “I have to be very clear on that one that more restrictions could be introduced if this trend continues. We are being reminded that we all need to be doing the things we were doing, in the beginning, to ensure that this third rise is quickly dealt with because the dynamics of this third rise appear to be different from the first one. “So especially if these numbers go up this way then just like the President himself articulated, then we are heading for more restrictions even if it means reviewing some Legal Instruments, yes that is where we will be heading.” He said Apexnewsgh.com/Ghana/Ngamegbulam Chidozie Stephen Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Ministerial list: Names coming and their possible positions
Considering the general order of things, the poorly-performing ministers are more likely to be dropped as some other new personality likely to replace them. Already, some names have pop up as potential ministers under the newly formed Akufo-Addo-led administration, some of these include maintained ministers who may be moved to other ministries, some who may be maintained in their ministries and others who may be the freshers in the team. Reshuffled ministers: According to a Dailyguide newspaper report, former Education Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) may be taking on John Peter Amewu’s former job as Energy Minister whilst Mr Amewu who is now the Hohoe MP moves to the Railways Ministry as substantive Minister. This will leave Mr Opoku Prempeh’s position for his former Deputy, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum who was quite cooperative with the administration of his duties in his previous capacity. Dan Botwe who was iconic with the reorganization and establishment of the 6 new regions as Regional Reorganisation and Development Minister is likely, per DailyGuide’s report, to be moved to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development which was previously occupied by Hajia Alima Mahama. Samuel Atta Akyea who was Works and Housing Minister may be moved to the Environment Ministry as its Minister. Retained Ministers: For those who particularly left distinctive marks after their first term, they have been projected to retain their various ministerial appointments. Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, Roads Minister who spearheaded the Year of Roads project, Kwasi Amoako Atta has also been named, Communications and Information Ministers, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah respectively, have been mentioned for this category. Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Food and Agriculture minister who spearheaded the Planting for Food and Jobs Policy, Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen, and Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey also have their names emerging for retaining. Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, Ambrose Dery, Interior Minister, Gender Minister, Cynthia Morrison and Transport Minister, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah also made the speculated list as reported by DailyGuide. It is still unknown, however, what the fate of Attorney General, Gloria Afua Akuffo will be moving forward; whether or not she will be maintained or if there even is any possibility of her being replaced by her deputy Godfred Dame who has become more popular in recent times. Akufo-Addo’s fight against ‘galamsey’ cost him votes in 2020 polls – Kojo Oppong Nkrumah
Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said the government’s interest in fighting against illegal small scale mining made the President a subject of victimisation at some point. According to him, President Akufo-Addo has had his share of denial in his bid to curb the menace. “President Akufo-Addo has himself been a victim of this fight against galamsey. The reality is that there are so many people internally and externally involved in this galamsey who end up fighting any president who desires to do a good job at it. He was reacting to concerns raised after the President charged all to keep the conversation about ending the operation, also known as ‘galamsey’, open even as he delivered his last state of the nation address on Tuesday. “There is one subject… I believe we the people need to have an open conversation, and that is the phenomenon of galamsey. Should we allow or not allow galamsey?” President Akufo-Addo quizzed in Parliament. But speaking on PM: Express on JoyNews Tuesday, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah explained the question was a rhetorical one. “The point the president was making is that we have to come around the table as leaders and have a conversation that this is not because it feeds my party or it could give my party a political gain, therefore, let me seek to make partisan political capital out of it.” Mr Akufo-Addo will not support such a move as he is keen on putting an end to galamsey, the Information Minister said on JoyNews. “Because if we do that, then we collectively lose, that’s the conversation the president is asking us to have because he takes his presidency on the line, he has taken bullets for it, he’s lost parliamentary seats.” According to him, the NPP lost some votes in the just-ended polls because of the campaign against the illegal actions. “I hear people ask how come your margin dropped from 900 thousand to 500 thousand?. “We (NPP) are clear in our minds that the fight against galamsey is one of the reasons, if you look at the returns for many of the galamsey areas, they voted heavily against the president and his candidates because at the same time, while even internal party persons were sabotaging the fight, you also have people on the other side of the political device.” Mr Oppong Nkrumah called on the media and the civil society to join the conversation and not just treat it as a challenge meant for the government to tackle. “Be quick to call it out and say guys, you may be on the other of the political device looking for power but you cannot say this to galamsey operators just because you want them to vote for you, you are undermining the national fight. “And Mr President, these people in your party who are involved in this enterprise is not good enough for us to a think-tank.” President Akufo-Addo on Tuesday indicated that “the pollution of our rivers and water bodies has been so acute on occasions that the Ghana Water Company Limited is unable to afford the distilling of water to make for safe drinking.” To buttress that point, the Information Minister observed that if Ghanaians allow politicians to engage in butter trade with ‘galamsey’ operators, the outcome may affect the future generations as “everybody is afraid to lose parliamentary seats and losing presidential margins if he touches that risk called galamsey.” “If everybody wants to politically posture and gain from it, your children and my children may not have water to drink. President Akufo-Addo is clear that we have to deal with it.” Myjoyonline Please contact Apexnewsgh.com on email apexnewsgh@gmail.com for your credible news publications. Contact: 0555568093.
It’s dangerous to think we’ve won- Info Minister
Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, over the weekend, admonished NPP campaigners not to think the 2020 election is an already done deal. Leading a street and House Campaign in Akyem Ayirebi in the Eastern Region, Mr. Nkrumah warned that the opposition NDC should not be underestimated in their ability to hoodwink Ghanaians in the last two weeks of the election. ”We have worked hard, but the most important thing now is to avoid complacency and ensure all-pro NPP registered voters cast their ballots correctly on Dec 7” he said. Distributing handbills and educating voters on how to vote, Mr. Nkrumah warned that any NPP member who assumes the election has been won already poses a danger to the cause of the party. ”We need to work hard because our future as a country depends on this election. All of us must work as though we were still in opposition. We must not stop knocking on doors, visiting shops and lorry stations until we secure a wide margin victory for Nana Addo and his MPs” he added. Vice President of policy think tank, Evans Badu Boampong has described the communication of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has extremely poor. He said the party has failed in communicating their so-achievements to ordinary Ghanaians and that could cause them their electoral fortunes. He was speaking to Kwabena Agyapong on Eboboba on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm. He said although the Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah is doing his best, the communication of the ruling party is poor. The policy analyst told the host the party has not made major promises as compared to 2016 because they have not been able to roll out the previous ones. He said the party is consolidating their gains and protecting what they have achieved so far. He noted no serious party will. make ambitious promise young into a second term when they have been unable to finish implementing their old promises. Evans Badu Boampong indicated this not a new phenomenon because it was bound to happen. He has challenged the NPP to improve communication through a multi-faceted approach to allow specialized persons to speak on their achievements.
