‘Be discerning about what you consume’ – FDA warns Ghanaians
The public should be more discerning about what they consume to avoid health implications, Mrs. Nora Narkie Terlabie, Ashanti Regional Head, Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has advised. Mrs. Terlabie said the public needs to be abreast of the conditions of an approved product, to enable them identify unapproved and suspicious products. She said this at the customer service week celebration organized by her outfit in Kumasi. The celebration offered a platform for the Authority and clients to have face-to-face interaction to enhance service delivery. She appealed to the media and social media influencers to demand FDA certification from clients who advertise with their medium to curb the influx of unwholesome and unapproved products on the market. The media, she said, are inundated with adverts of many products, some of which, she said, had not been tested or approved by the FDA. “The Authority faces some challenges including unapproved advertisements of products on both traditional and new media. Many claims of the potency of some drugs and products, which have not been proven but are aired daily on the traditional media especially, on radio stations. “The FDA exists not only to regulate Food, Drugs, Herbal and Homeopathic Medicines, Veterinary Medicines, Cosmetics, Medical Devices, Household Chemical Substances, Tobacco and Tobacco Products, Blood and Blood Products as well as the conduct of Clinical Trials but also to serve as an advisory body to those who aspire to either sell or produce any FDA regulated products,” she added. Mrs. Terlabie urged the public to involve the authority in their dealings, especially when importing any product to ensure proper testing and certification. She encouraged the public to assist the Authority by making reports, complaints, or suggestions on the quality of services rendered, as well as on non-conforming organizations and unwholesome products on the market for prompt action. “Such pieces of information help the FDA in weeding out fake and unwholesome products from the market and improve upon our services,” Mrs Terlabie said. ‘You have the right to protest but not in a violent manner’ – ECOWAS to Nigerians
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has said it has noted with concern that demonstrations by Nigerian youth calling for police reform, particularly the abolition of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police, accused of misconduct by those demonstrating, have turned violent. Scores of Nigerians and some security officers have been killed during the violent protests in the oil-producing West African nation. The Commission in a statement on Wednesday, October 21 expressed its condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives during the protests and wishes the injured a speedy recovery. “While ECOWAS Commission recognizes the right of citizens to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly and protests, it also wishes to stress that those rights should be exercised in a non-violent manner. “In this regard, ECOWAS Commission calls on all protesters to remain peaceful in the conduct of their demonstrations. It also urges the Nigerian security operatives to exercise restraint in the handling of the protests and act professionally,” the statement said. It added that “ECOWAS Commission further notes that, in an effort to address the demands of the protesting youth, the Federal Government of Nigeria took important decisions regarding disbandment of SARS, comprehensive police reforms and investigation of cases of police brutality. In the past 24 hours, there has been surmounting pressure on Nana Akufo-Addo, as ECOWAS Chair, to speak out on the ongoing unrest in neighbouring country Nigeria. Nigerian youth have for the past twelve days engaged in a series of protest to demand better treatment from their government. The protests, themed #EndSars and #EndPolicebrutality saw thousands gather at vantage points to register their displeasure. At the climax of the event, however, there was a shootout by alleged military personnel killing several Nigerian citizens on Tuesday evening. Few hours after the killing, Akufo-Addo’s first post this morning on Twitter was about his position on the ballot paper for the upcoming polls. “Number 1 on the ballot. Let’s maintain the first position on 7th December 2020 to do more for Ghanaians. Vote for Akufo-Addo and the NPP. #4MoreForNana,” his tweet read. #EndSARS Protest: Take responsibility and step down, Fani-Kayode hits Buhari
A former Aviation Minister and foremost Chieftain of the main opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has on Tuesday advised President Muhammadu Buhari to humbly take responsibility for the ongoing protest and honourable step-down as President of the federal republic. Fani-Kayode noted that as credible, laudable, vital, noble, necessary and important as the #EndPoliceBrutality and #EndSARS protests and initiatives are to every right-thinking, reasonable and rational person they are nothing but a mild irritation and meaningless slogans to the President. In a statement released on his Facebook page, the former Aviation minister lamented that tyrant leaders, whether democratically-elected or not, have little respect for the will of the people and do not bow to reason. In 2013 Buhari himself together with other leading members of the then opposition came out and marched in the streets against Jonathan.” “No-one threatened them. No-one accused them of attempting to subvert the state or destabilise the country. No-one dismissed them with contempt or subjected them to insults, threats and brutal reprisals.” “No-one brought out thugs and miscreants to attack and kill them and burn their cars. No one opened the doors of the prisons and accused them of raiding and freeing prisoners.” No-one called them unprintable names and threatened to bring out troops on the streets to kill them. #Lekki Toll Gate killings: Forces beyond control makes dark history – Sanwo-Olu
Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described the Tuesday night killing of #EdnSARS protesters at Lekki Toll Gate as “the toughest night of our lives forces beyond our direct control have moved to make dark notes in our history, but we will face it and come out stronger.” Sanwo-Olu made the remark on his official Twitter handle in reaction to the dastardly act. I’ve just concluded visits to hospitals with victims of this unfortunate shooting incident at Lekki . It has taken me this long to make a statement because I have to prioritize the welfare of the victims of this very sad incident.
