The spokesperson for Ayieta family of Sandema in the Upper East Region Robert Atong Asekabta, has refuted the death rumor of their son Gregory Afoko who has been in the Custody of BNI for some time now over the alleged murder of the late Upper East Regional New Patriotic Party Chairman Adam Mahama. When Apexnewsgh.com engaged the family spokesperson Robert Atong Asekabta, he refuted the dead news flying around the various news portal across the country. “The news is wrong, Gregory Afoko is alive and healthy. How can someone who is in BNI custody and at the same time can be affected with COVID? Now, he is been tested and he is negative. For anyone who will think of such a thing for your ward, your son, who is in the custody, first, he was in prison custody and was later transferred to BNI custody for a year now and for almost five years, no justice is given, why won’t you suspect injustice? Or something foul coming from somewhere.” He lamented “We will be alerting the Builsa community in the country and diaspora and also, we are appealing to all human rights activists to help and ensure that Gregory Afoko is freed. The Upper East Regional Manager of the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority, DVLA, Munta- wakilu Abdulai has called on local government, the traditional authority, and the general population to show interest in the national policies to educate drivers in a local language in order to reduce the rate of the road accident. According to the Regional Manager, the various Municipal and District Assemblies who are the mouthpiece of the local community people inviting the DVLA and the National Road Safety in educating the populace. Speaking in an interview Mr. Mukta-wakilu bemoaned that “the District Assemblies have a lot of responsibility in public education but they are failing on that part, they should not wait to attend the funerals of the people” “You even see some of them going to the Police station to bail people who have been arrested by the Police for infringing road regulations, meanwhile, you can teach the people the right thing to do” he added. He further revealed that the DVLA is currently piloting educating drivers in local languages in Accra and Kumasi before execution in other parts of the country adding that DVLA is initiating a program dubbed Wipe out, an oral education to cover over half of the local languages being spoken in the country to cater for the uneducated populace in their mother language when obtaining Drivers License. He disclosed that about twelve thousand vehicles and motorcycles have been registered in the Upper East Region between January and October this year. According to him this represents a 10 percent increase over figures recorded in 2019 of about 11,500 and expressed the hope that by the close of the year, it will reach its 30 percent targeted increase. While encouraging motorists to use a safety helmet, the Regional Manager urged vehicle owners and users to pay their roadworthy which is used for developmental purposes. According to Statistics from the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority, DVLA, about 130 accident cases were reported to the outfit with 117 of the cases attended to in the upper East Region from January to October this year. About 53 fatalities were recorded mostly involving motorbikes accidents under the same period. The Regional Manager of the Drivers and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Osman Muta wakilu Abdulai revealed that most of these vehicular accidents were as a result of drunk driving, over speeding, collision with strayed animals crossing the road as well as the road environment. He attributed some portions of the blame on the failure of the Highways and the Urban Roads to maintain a good road environment arguing that the bad state of the roads contributes significantly to road crashes and related deaths, Ahead of the general elections and the yuletide, the regional Manager cautioned road users to observe all road safety regulation and maintain the good shape of their vehicles in order to stay alive. He cautioned road users to mindful of the poor visibility during the season of Harmattan and to keep their headlamp on even during the day to forestall collision with oncoming vehicles. UER: Familiarity breeding contempt to our message on SRHR- Peer educators cries out.
Peer Educators from the Bongo District have expressed concern about over-familiarity with members of the community that is affecting the reception and response to their message on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in the District. They complain about the apathy expressed by some members of the community is a great disincentive to educating their peers on matters of Drug abuse, teenage pregnancy amongst other issues of concern in the District. A Peer Educator John Ayamga made this known in an interview on the sidelines of a review meeting for 50 Peer Educators on sexual and reproductive health and rights activities in six districts in the Upper East region held in Bolgatanga. While citing the lack of formal introduction by the National Youth Authority to the communities, the lack of dedicated funding as well as personal protective equipment as other challenges confronting the Peer Educators, Mr. Ayamga maintained in spite of the many challenges the Peer Educator usually cease the opportunity at youth meetings, community gatherings as well phone-in segment on Radio programs to put their message across. When contacted the Upper East Regional Director of the National Youth Authority, Francis Takyi Koranteng acknowledged the challenges following his familiarization tour to some of the districts, adding the concerns will be channeled to the appropriate quarters for the needed attention to resource the peer educators. He encouraged peer educators to make reports and footages of their activities in their various communities to serve as a document that can be used to seek support from donors. The National Youth Authority is a co-implementor with the Regional Coordinating Council implementing the government of Ghana and UNDFP 2018-2022 country program for youth representatives in Talensi, Bongo, Nabdam, Bawku West, Builsa south, and Kassena Nankana West Districts of the Upper East Region. The UNDF sponsored comprehensive sexuality education aims at helping youth between 15 and 19 years old to make informed choices and to create awareness at the Community level for all stakeholders to appreciate the challenges and traditional phenomenon that hinders young people’s access to information, services, and supplies they need to make a safe, healthy and fulfilling transition to adulthood. The Upper East Regional Director of the National Youth Authority observed that there had been a remarkable improvement in some aspects of adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights in the country, saying most girls spend time on educational progression and employable skills acquisition. Speaking at a review meeting for 50 Peer Educators on sexual and reproductive health and rights activities in six districts in the Upper East region he expressed excitement that harmful practices such as Female Genital Mutilation, trokosi system, limitation of girls to the kitchen or baby care rooms have reduced admitting that more effort to be done. The meeting organized by the National Youth Authority and the regional coordinating council under the government of Ghana and UNDFP 2018-2022 country programme for youth representatives in six Districts. Mr. Takyi Koranteng further urged all new and existing youth-focused organizations in the region to register with the National Youth Authority for the needed recognition on their database in order to benefit from policies and programmes of the Authority. The National Youth Authority has since October 5, 2020, begun processes to re-register all existing and registration of all newly formed youth-focused organizations at the community, district and regional level in line with Section 25 of the National Youth Authority Act. This is part of their mandate to compile an up to date comprehensive and reliable database to ensure purposeful and more effective coordination of youth development and empowerment intervention and to effectively regulate the youth sector. This will lead to the formation of the Ghana Youth Federation in fulfillment of section 3 (d) of Act 939.
