Someone should be fired if LGBT+ group can’t be closed down – Sam George
The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Sam George has called for the dismissal of some authorities who have not taken any action to close down the newly opened Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Intersex Rights (LGBT+) office in Ghana. According to the MP, government and ministries responsible must take swift action before the LGBT+ group become a functional lobbyist group capable of funding political parties to get their rights enacted into law. “This thing happened 6-days ago and none of the Ambassadors has been summoned by the Foreign Affairs to answer any question. If our Foreign Ministry and National Security is not aware of this after six days, someone must be fired,” the MP stated. He added, “You don’t seat down and let them fester and then become a functional lobbyist group in this country whereby they will start raising funds for political parties so that they start electing their members of parliament to effect a change of the law.” Sam George noted with examples that President Akufo-Addo has a great responsibility to continue from where his predecessors left by ensuring that LGBT+ still holds as a criminal offence. “Akufo-Addo’s position on the LGBT+ beholds him a higher responsibility to come out and then clamp down,” Sam George said on the Good Morning Ghana show on Metro TV. European Union (EU) on January 31, 2021, aided in the opening of a new office space for LGBT+ group in Accra, declaring its support for similar organisations. The group organized a fundraiser to help promote its activities in the country. The event which was attended by Australian High Commissioner, His Excellency Gregory Andrews, the Danish Ambassador, His Excellency Tom Nørring and some delegates from the EU have received a huge backlash from the Ghanaian community who frown on the operationalization of such a group. Another Church Disaster: Uncompleted building collapses, one in critical condition in Volta Region
Justice Kekeli Biedo, a 6-year-old boy is battling for his life at the St. Anthony hospital in Dzodze after portion of an uncompleted Church building collapsed on him and his brother, GNA has reported. His brother, Kingsley Biedo, 13, who is said to have sustained a fracture, is also responding to treatment. The building has been identified as Divine Healing Church branch at Adetsewui in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta region. Mr Kennedy Biedo, father of both victims, who is also the Assembly member of the area, explained to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that his sons, who are pupils of Akatsi Duawodome Basic school left Akatsi on Friday, to visit their grandmother at Adetsewui, when the disaster struck them. He said on Sunday February 21 at about 0530 hours, his sons together with their auntie went to the Church premises to get it ready for service. He added that part of the building, which has no pillars, gave way and fell on his sons. Fortunately, the Church was not in session as of the time the incident happened, the Ghana News Agency observed. However, the Akatsi South Municipal Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) is yet to assess the situation for any possible action. Fight against ‘trumu trumu’ is not of the Lord’s – Prof. Yaw Gyampo
Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Ransford Edward Van Gyampo says Ghana’s fight against LGBTQI is not of the Lord’s. According to him, the “ordinary people” will themselves fight homosexuals without the involvement of God. In a post on Facebook sighted by Ghanaguardian.com, Prof. Yaw Gyampo described homosexuality as “animalistic” which will not be supported by the masses. The comments come after one Alex Dordah queried Prof. Gyampo who is critical of issues of national interest, to openly come out and condemn LGBTQI and their activities in the country. “So Prof you wouldn’t speak against the lgbt? You are too loud in your silence why,” he questioned the UG professor under the comment section of one of his recent posts on Facebook. In a courteous response, Mr. Gyampo wrote, “Hahahaha…..Ah but who will support excuse me to say “trumu trumu?” Any attempt to make it fester would be crushed by ordinary people. We won’t even allow God to fight this. It is simply animalistic and no one will support it.” At the moment, there is a nationwide conversation about people practising homosexuality in Ghana. The allege establishment of an LGBTQI office in the country is what triggered the conversations. While some are calling on the President to immediately hanker down on the said office and their operations, others say, just like every other individual, gays and lesbians are also entitled to the fundamental human rights of this country. Religious leaders, CSOs unable to speak against LGBTQI for fear of being denied visas – Finder Editor
Journalist and managing editor of the Finder newspaper Elvis Darko has said that many leaders of religious and political bodies, media houses and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) are unable to speak on the LGBTQI issue in the country for fear of being denied visas to countries of the West that have upheld rights of the LGBTQI community. “Many religious, political, CSO, Media leaders are afraid to speak on the LGBTQI issue for fear of being denied a visa to western countries,” he wrote on social media. In recent times, the LGBTQI issue has been raging in the country following the opening of an office in the country to promote activities and programs of the LGBTQI community. But some well-known leaders of various sectors of the country have remained quiet on the matter leading to Mr Darko’s conclusion that it has to do with the acquisition of visas to the West, a major proponent for the legalization of LGBTQI rights globally. Meanwhile many have called on the President to come clear on the activities of the community in the wake of the establishment of its office in the country. Homosexuality is outlawed in the country and Ghanaians appear to be against the practice, arguing that it is inconsistent with the Ghanaian culture that allows love relationships only between males and females. IMANI will accept unconditional funds from LGBTQI groups – Franklin Cudjoe
Founding President of IMANI Africa Mr Franklin Cudjoe has dismissed assertions on social media that his organization received funding from Lesbian, Gay, Bisexuals, Transgender, and Queer Individuals (LGBTQI) groups. He stated that IMANI has not received any support from these groups. However, Mr Cudjoe stated that if such groups decide to give unconditional funds to IMANI for its mission of holding public officers accountable, the think tank will not hesitate in accepting the money. On IMANI’s position on LGBTQI issues, he stated that they hold conservative, Christian, almost Catholic thoughts on such issues, but at the same time recognize its limitations to recommend how other humans should live their lives. “I now understand why some are asking for IMANI’s stance on LGBTQI issues. I have read a bit now. Let me state emphatically, that IMANI has never received any support from any LGBTQI groups. They become fascists and good for nothing in society.” Dr Poku Adusei was Deputy Director-General in charge of General Services (DDG-G) of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and was re-appointed in 2019 to head the legal team of the National Communications Authority (NCA), after a one-and-a-half-year of service at the GSA.
