Breaking: Chief beaten to pulp, Stripped Naked by Unknown Men
Tension is brewing in Dixcove in the Ahanta West District of the Western Region following an attack on a sub-chief of Upper Dixcove. The sub-chief was attacked by men believed to have come from Lower Dixcove even though none of the men have been identified yet. Nana Diako Kra was beaten to a pulp and allegedly stripped naked by the men on Monday, March 15 while he was returning from Lower Dixcove. The reasons for the attack are very sketchy but the Paramount Chief of Upper Dixcove told Connect FM that the attack was unprovoked. According to Obirempong Hima Dekyi, his sub-chief was on his way home from Lower Dixcove when he was suddenly attacked, stripped naked in the full glare of the public, and subjected to severe beatings. The victim, with four other members of the royal family, all-sustaining varying degrees of injury, is receiving treatment at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital. It appears the disturbance that made life unstable for the people of Dixcove has reared its ugly head again. Dr Afriyie Akoto discloses presidential ambition to top-notch NPP power brokers in Ashanti
The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto who has been nurturing a presidential ambition on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has taken his moves to a new level. During the weekend, he initiated a private meeting with some top-notch power brokers of the New Patriotic party (NPP) in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region. At the said meeting, he made his presidential ambition known to those who gathered, which included some constituency chairmen in the Ashanti Region, Graphic Online has been told by some sources. Dr Afriyie Akoto, a close pal of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and a son of the late Baffour Osei Akoto, who was a chief linguist of the Manhyia Palace, and a prominent member of the pre-independence National Liberation Movement (NLM) has been interested in becoming president for sometime but kept it to himself with the exception of close associates who knew about it. He is said to have explained at the meeting that there has been incessant calls on him to enter the presidential race to replace President Akufo-Addo in 2024. Political career Dr Afriyie Akoto served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for two terms representing the people of the Kwadaso constituency in Kumasi from January 7, 2009 to January 6, 2017. He made his first move towards Parliament in the year 2000 at the then Bantama constituency challenging Dr Richard Anane who was seeking re-election after his first term. When Dr Akoto was unsuccessful at the primary to run on the ticket of the NPP, he went independent and lost the Parliamentary election at Bantama to Dr Anane. In 2004, the then Bantama constituency (which was popularly referred to then as Florida) was divided into three – Nhyiaeso, Kwadaso and Bantama and Dr Akoto attempted the bid at Kwadaso but lost to new entrant Hilda Josephine Addo at the NPP primary. He relaunched his campaign in 2008 and defeated Hilda Addo who failed the re-election bid. In 2015 however, the new entrant and young lecturer, Dr Kwadwo Nuamah defeated him at the NPP primary. For the two terms that Dr Akoto was in Parliament – 2009 to 2013 and 2013 to 2017, he served as the Minority Spokesperson on Agriculture. Breaking: Charges against Ernesto Yeboah withdrawn by State

15-year-old begs for GHS17, 000 to undergo radiotherapy at Korle Bu
A 15-year-old Junior High School student is appealing to the general public to help him raise GHS17, 232 to undergo radiotherapy for cancer in the throat and neck. Richmond Amoako from Ho in the Volta Region was diagnosed of cancer in the throat (nasopharyngeal) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra on 6 August 2020. Amoako’s mother, Peace Asimenu, said the family is incapable of raising the whopping sum hence her appeal to well-meaning Ghanaians to come to their aid, adding until then they will continue to resort to herbal alternatives and God’s intervention. “I first sent him to my village for interventions but there was no positive outcome, so I quickly returned to Ho. Then I decided to send him to prayer camps and churches for God’s intervention, I first of all sent him to a prayer camp at Matse (suburb of Ho) for four months fasting and prayers, we then moved to Kpetoe for one month, I also sent him to a pastor in Accra where we spent about one and half month,” the mother who sells sugarcane at the Ho Central Market told Asaase News. The single mother of three children is also calling on the government to assist them as her son’s situation deteriorates. “One of my sons got admission at Kumasi (KNUST) but due to his (Richmond’s) condition, the brother was not able to go to the school, he is in the house with me. I’m a sugarcane seller so he is helping me to sell the sugar cane and that is what we survive on. “I’ve already buried three of my sons, and this one too will die? Please help me, I’m begging the entire nation to help me,” Asimenu pleaded. Touching on his condition, Amoako said he finds it difficult to breathe. “I can’t breathe well. I cannot swallow, and I’m always feeling pains, sometimes if I take the pain killer it pains me more before I get some relief. I can’t even chew at one side of my tooth, I can’t turn my neck,” he explained. Stigmatisation Amoako said he is already being stigmatised against at school. “When I go to school, I feel ashamed because of how they have been talking about me. It got to a point I told my mother I don’t want to go to school again because after seeing the sickness, they’ve changed towards me, they don’t want to come close to me again. “God is the healer, but without the people I can’t get treatment so I pray to God to touch the heart of the people to help me and I’m sure God will not shame us,” Amoako said with optimism. Pursue demands through negotiation, arbitration – Telcos told
The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunications has said although the Telecom and IT Professionals Union have a right to strike, they should rather pursue their demands through negotiation and arbitration. Grammatical errors in your apology letter make you unfit to be publishers – Ablakwa to Badu Nkansah
North Tongu Lawmaker Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has rejected the apology letter written by publishers of the controversial history textbook Badu Nkansah. Mr Ablakwa who is also a former Deputy Minister of Education said the apology letter is “an apology of apology” because “they are not taking responsibility.” Asking for forgiveness for the controversial textbook, Badu Nkansah explained in a press statement on Monday March 15 that “They, however, told us to work on certain aspects of the book further in order for it to meet the expectations of the new curriculum.” “We have seen certain snapshots on social media which has generated public uproar due to its offensive tone. Though it is not a deliberate attempt to berate such a huge section of our society, we wish to unreservedly apologize for the slip,” the statement added. But speaking in an interview with TV3’s Dela Mishel on the Mid Day news on Monday, Mr Ablakwa said “It is clear that these publications have caused public uproar and outrage and as a Member of Parliament from the region, I thought it wise to file an urgent question requesting the minister responsible for education to come and respond to questions as to how these books found their way into our schools. “There is an agency called National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NACAA) which is the gatekeeper and must ensure that before books are placed in the hands of our innocent children those books meet standards, that those books are authorised so that our children are not miseducated and are not polluted. “All of those things appeared to have been violated. The Children have been left at the mercy of people who are only interested in profiteering. “I have seen the apology from Badu Nkansah publications and honestly, it is an apology of an apology. They are not taking responsibility. ‘Efo juju’ textbooks: Volta House of Chiefs condemns publishers
The Volta Regional House of Chiefs has condemned the publishers of History of Ghana Textbook 3 and Golden English Basic 4 book for publishing contents that make “derogatory allusions and innuendos at Ewes.” While History of Ghana Textbook 3 by Badu Nkansah Publications features a song that purported portrays the Ewe identity, Golden English Basic 4 by Golden Publications wrote a sentence which said: ‘Efo agrees to prepare the juju for the players’ on page 17. In a statement issued by the Regional House of Chiefs and signed by its President, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV on Monday, 15 March 2021, the Volta chiefs noted that their attention has been drawn to the contents of a “book designed for use by lower classes in the current educational structure.” The house described some of the content of the books which it refers to casting “derogatory allusions and innuendos at Ewes,” as “distasteful and a disgrace to the authors and publishers of the said material intended to educate the younger generation of this country.” The Regional House of Chiefs said: “We deem it highly reprehensible for those responsible for this offensive publication, to harbour such vile thoughts about their fellow citizens of Ghana in the twenty-first century.” “We therefore unreservedly condemn this singular demonstration of tribal bigotry and prejudice and call on those responsible for the offensive publication, to withdraw the same from circulation and to destroy every part of the offending material. The house further demanded “an unqualified apology from the authors and publishers of this base material to be rendered to all Ewe speaking citizens of Ghana” It urged other “ethnic groups in this country, to condemn such divisive publications which only serve as a recipe for chaos and disunity.” The house added that: “In the event that this ill-advised publication is discovered anywhere after our demand for the same to be withdrawn from circulation, we hereby serve notice that the Chiefs and people of Ewe ethnic origin, will take appropriate legal measures to ensure that these mischief-makers walk on the right side of the law.” Meanwhile, Ghanaian-owned publishing company, Badu Nkansah Publications, has apologised to Ghanaians for the circulation of their History of Ghana Textbook 3, which features condescending content of Ewes. In a statement by the publishing company, Badu Nkansah Publications said: “Following the introduction of the new curriculum by NaCCA, we submitted a textbook application for approval for our book History of Ghana in January last year. We received a response to our application from NaCCA on 25th September (Reference NaCCA /G14).” It continued that: “The NaCCA raised concerns with portions of the book even though they informed us that the book had satisfied most of the technical and content requirements. In 2024 Ghana will once again go to the polls to elect a new leader and one thing is certain in that contest, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will not be on the ballot paper. His two terms in office, as stipulated in the 1992 Constitution would be up and he will leave office having served for 8 years. As such, the New Patriotic Party (NPP)would have to elect a new candidate to square off with the candidate of their closest opponents, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Already, it appears the race as to who will lead the NPP in 2024 is a straight fight between Vice President Dr Mahammudu Bawumia and Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen. None has publicly stated their desire to lead the party but every student of politics knows they will be in the mix. The impending race for the NPP flagbearer has led to unproven speculations and allegations that all is not well between the two potentially leading candidates. That belief and suspicion was heightened last week when President Akufo-Addo ostensibly snubbed both Dr Bawumia and Alan Kyerematen when he was looking for someone to read the 2021 Budget in the absence of Finance Minister-Designate Ken Ofori Atta. Initial suggestions had leaned towards Alan Kyerematen, and then it shifted to Dr Bawumia. President Akufo-Addo eventually settled on Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and MP for Suame, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu to present the 2021 budget to the house on Friday, March 12. That decision it is believed was to avoid the situation where the one picked between the two would be seen as receiving the president’s endorsement way before the party goes to the polls to choose a leader to replace Nana Addo as leader of the NPP. However, during the budget reading on Friday, March 12, the two personalities (Dr Bawumia and Alan) were seen demonstrating great camaraderie. In a photo widely shared on Social Media, the Trade Minister, Alan Kyerematen with one hand raised is seen slightly bending to greet Dr Bawumia who was seated on a sofa. Bawumia with his hands clasped reciprocates the gesture in a show of respect. Another photo at the same event captures the two in an engrossing conversation after they exchanged pleasantries. While the photos may to a certain degree douse the seeming or suspected tension it should not come as a surprise when things get heated, especially among supporters of these two when the time to elect a new leader of the party gets closer. ‘Does he think I’m at the beck and call of NDC, I’m Speaker for Ghana’ – Bagbin on Sammy Gyamfi attack
Speaker Alban Bagbin has told Class Media Group’s Accra100.5FM, Class91.3FM and CTV in an interaction scheduled for simultaneous airing on Monday, March 15, 2021 on all three channels that he does not belong to any political party now that he occupies the position of the third-most powerful person in Ghana. The longest-serving legislator in Ghana’s political history, after a rancorous Speakership poll, ascended the position a little over two months ago despite his party, the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) having lost the December 7, 2020 presidential election and splitting the 275 seats of Parliament with the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP). The former Nadowli-Kaleo MP, who had been a lawmaker since the almost-three-decade-old fourth republic of Ghana, recently came under attack, along with Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu and Minority Whip Muntaka Muburak, from the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Mr Sammy Gyamfi, after the house passed some contentious ministerial nominees of President Nana Akufo-Addo despite express directives from the Functional Executive Committee of the party, that those ministers-designate be rejected for various reasons. In a social media harangue, Mr Gyamfi said the NDC no more regarded Mr Bagbin as an NDC Speaker, even though he attained the position on the party’s ticket. The Facebook tirade on Thursday, March 4, 2021, accused Mr Bagbin and the leadership of the Minority Caucus, of betraying the party by approving the nominees. “Some have sold their conscience but ours is intact. And we can work together to rebuild the party from the ashes of 3 March 2021, which I call ‘Black Wednesday’ – our day of self-inflicted shame”, Mr Gyamfi said in the post, adding: “This is the time for us to insist on the right changes in the leadership of the NDC group in Parliament or forget about them completely”. To him, “the current leadership have lost their moral authority to lead and are not fit to sit on the front bench of the NDC side of the house”. “More importantly”, he noted, “it’s about time we understood that we don’t have any NDC Speaker of Parliament”. “No, we don’t!” he stressed, in reference to Mr Bagbin, complaining: “We have a Speaker who rode on the back of the NDC into office to pursue his own parochial agenda and nothing more”. “You trust them at your own peril”, he warned members and supporters of the NDC. Passing a brief comment about the attack on him during a courtesy call by CMG, at which meeting he spoke about the need to strengthen the capacity of the media, Mr Bagbin said: “Recently in the media, on social media, in particular, you have heard the blistering attack on me when I did not play any role apart from presiding [over the business of the house]”. “Because I say I belong or came from a party, does he [Sammy Gyamfi] think I’m at the beck and call of the party?” he asked. “Now, I don’t belong to any party. I’m Speaker of Ghana. I’m not a Speaker of NPP. I’m not a Speaker of NDC. I’m Speaker of Ghana. And I must hold the balance. So, decision-taking; no. My duty is to ensure that there’s an even playing field and the decision is taken and I announce it. That is all”, he explained his role. “And, so, if you sit down and look at me and think that maybe you were my girlfriend before [and, therefore] I should give you an advantage over another who I’ve never met, please, then don’t come to me; you won’t get it.
