United States population tops 331 million and slowest growth since 1930s
The United States has a population topping 331 million, marking the country’s slowest growth rate since the 1930s and the second slowest ever, the U.S. Census Bureau announced on Monday. In total, the U.S. population rose to 331,449,281 in 2020, up by 7.4 percent compared to the growth between 2000 and 2010, according to the Census Bureau. Demographers said the United States may be entering an era of substantially lower population growth due to a number of reasons such as a leveling off of immigration, a declining birthrate, an aging population and the scars of the 2008 financial crisis forcing many Americans to delay marriage and starting families. Six states will gain more seats in Congress during the upcoming once-a-decade redistricting battles based on the new census results. Among them, Texas will add two seats while Colorado, Florida, Montana, North Carolina and Oregon will each gain one seat. California, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia will all lose congressional seats ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. The new allocation of congressional seats shows that political power in the country is shifting from states in the Midwest and Northeast to those in the South and West, local media said. Census officials said they were “very confident in the quality of the data” that they collected last year despite a once-a-century coronavirus pandemic, wildfires, hurricanes, as well as controversy over former President Donald Trump’s failed attempt to add a citizenship question to the census form. The Supreme Court eventually blocked Trump’s plan. However, questions about its accuracy will most likely surface when the Census Bureau releases detailed demographic files for each state later this year, according to local media reports. Akufo-Addo put a stop to all security recruitment; says ‘no money’ to pay them
President Nana Akufo-Addo has, through the Ministry of Finance, directed that all recruitment into state security institutions should be put on hold until the rightful clearance or instruction is communicated. A communiqué from the Finance Ministry warned that there will be no money for logistics and salaries for the new recruits if they were to complete their training. The affected security agencies are Custom Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), Ghana Police Service and Ghana Fire Service. He together with his operational commander briefed me on the current security situation and efforts at containing the emerging threats to security in the Region. Among others, they highlighted the following: I. Spate of armed robberies in the Region and the Municipality. ii. Influx and criminal activities of illegal immigrants in the Region. Iii. Operational re-allignment of staff as well as accelerated operationalisation of Divisional commands in Bolgatanga and Navrongo to improve coordination of intelligence gathering and deployment. iv. Challenges and efforts at resolving logistical constraints. 2. The second call was on a combined Divisional and Municipal commands where in addition to the issues raised by the Regional Police Command, the following were discussed: I. The need to intensify education on mob and instant justice with a call for the Judiciary to expedite criminal cases to forestall the confidence crisis. II. The need to operationalise the Police Station in Sumburugu. To this end I offered to assist them furnish the station. iii. The need for a new Police Station on the Sherigu- Naaga corridor for which I already submitted an application to the Municipal Assembly around November, 2020 to procure the services of a contractor and apply my share of the common fund to construct a Police Station in Sherigu. iv. The need for motor bikes for patrols to curtail the incidence of armed robberies”. UER: A swoop by Police and Immigration arrested 480 foreigners in UER
480 Burkinabe and Nigerian nationals have been arrested in the Upper East Region in a swoop for illegally residing in the country. The Sunday dawn swoop was conducted in Bolgatanga and some parts of the region by the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Immigration Service. The arrest follows a huge public outcry over the influx of foreigners into the region in the wake of rising violent crimes. The foreigners per information available are said to have been lured into the country with the hope of getting well-paying jobs. They’re often seen in their numbers in many suburbs of Bolgatanga and Navrongo with some staying in uncompleted structures. The Public Affairs Officer of the upper east regional police command, ASP David Fianko Okyere explained to dreamzfmonline.com that the swoop was conducted on Sunday morning upon confirmation through intelligence gathering that the complaints by residents that many foreigners had arrived in their large numbers and living in rented apartments in their numbers were true. He disclosed that the Burkinabes will be handed over to the Burkinabe authorities while the Nigerian nationals will be taken to the national capital, Accra. “Residents of Bolgatanga have raised concerns about the influx of foreigners into the city and we picked other intelligence that, that information is correct and so this morning we conducted intelligence patrols and swoops in some locations in the regional capital and other parts of the region and we arrested 480 Nigerians and Burkinabes. You know that our borders are closed so we’re now interrogating them to find out how they were able to enter this country. Those who are Burkinabes, because we are closer to them, obviously, we will want to hand them over to the Burkinabe authorities at the border but that will be done by the Immigration Service but the Nigerians they will be sent to the Immigration headquarters in Accra,” he disclosed in a telephone interview.
