UER: Teenage pregnancy and school dropout for the first quarter of 2021 exceeds that of 2020 by 14.5 percent.
According to data from the Ghana Health Service District Health Information Management System as of April 30, 2021, it shows that the Upper East Region recorded 1632 teenage pregnancies in the first quarter of this year representing a 14.5 percent increase over figures recorded in 2020 which recorded a total of 6533 for the whole year. For the district and municipal breakdown, Bawku West lead the table with 207 teenage pregnancy cases followed by Talensi with 162, Pusiga 152, Bongo 150, Bolgatanga 139, Kasena Nankana West 120, Bawku 112, Kasena Nankana 109. The rest are Garu with 105 reported cases of teenage pregnancies, Tempane 94, Binduri 71, Builsa South 68, Nabdam 63, Builsa North 52 and Bolgatanga East recording 35 cases. This was revealed at a review meeting for 50 Peer Educators on sexual and reproductive health rights in six districts organized by the National Youth Authority NYA and the Upper East Regional Coordinating Council under the auspices of the government of Ghana and the UNFPA 2018-2022 country programme. In his welcome address, the Upper East Regional Director for the National Youth Authority Francis Takyi Koranteng observed with the current trend, the future of the country is in limbo. Teenage pregnancy, young single mother issues and unwarranted sex-related deaths are on the ascendency especially as a result of the COVID 19 induced restrictions with its job losses and the bottleneck surrounding the smooth flow of goods and services. He encouraged the 50 peer educators from the Builsa South, Kasena Nankana west, Bongo, Talensi, Nabdam and Bawku West to collaborate with health workers and community members to intensify information dissemination and provision of Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights services for adolescents. Mr. Takyi Koranteng further urged them to create a platform at the community level for all stakeholders to appreciate the traditional phenomenon that hinders young people’s access to these resources. The Upper East Region was ranked 7th in the national ranking for the year 2020 relative to the number of teenage pregnancies recorded. MTN GHANA HOLDS 3rd ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING VIRTUALLY ON TUESDAY MAY 25, 2021
Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) will host shareholders at a virtual meeting via www.mtnghagm.com from 11:00am on Tuesday May 25, 2021. The meeting, which is the company’s third Annual General Meeting (AGM) since going public, will be streamed live from the company’s head office at MTN House, Independence Avenue. The meeting will enable shareholders to discuss the audited financial statements together with the reports of the Directors and Auditors, appoint and fix remuneration of auditors and approve the payment of directors fee for the year ended 31st December 2020. NDC’s Afriyie Ankrah satisfied with EC’s Dr Serebour Quaicoe attitude
The former’s Director of Elections of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed some level of satisfaction praises on the recent attitude from the Director of Electoral Services. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah who was speaking during a discussion on The Keypoints on TV3/3FM monitored by Apexnewsgh.com said he has been impressed by the recent attitude of Dr Serebour Quaicoe. In 2020, the NDC boycotted a two-day workshop on elections and shot down all the reforms agreed by parties at the workshop. Meanwhile, four key reforms were agreed to by the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC). But the NDC demanded that a reform of the attitude of the Electoral Commission itself should crank up any reforms to be proposed. “First of all, we want a reform of their attitude. That’s number one,” the former Youth and Sports Minister told host Adwoa Tabi. “We want Bossman Asare to withdraw that prejudicial statement which is on record,” he added, referring to a pronouncement by the Deputy Chair of the EC in charge of Corporate Services that the NDC was an “existential threat” to Ghana’s democracy. “And for once, let me admit that his tone and tenor and manner were very different from what I have been seeing. “He said oh the proposals they put forward are subject to discussion and inputs and therefore if the NDC has any other proposals, they are ready and willing to listen and engage. MMDCE: Upper East Region carry first in the northern sector after a total official number of 229 applied for the MMDC positions
Upper East Region, is leading in terms of the number of aspirants contesting the position of Metropolitan Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE, s) in the northern sector with 237 aspiring candidates across the 16 districts in the region. Even though, the governing New Patriotic Party in the Upper East Region was heavily criticized after the 2020 general election for an abysmal performance shown since the party history according to critics, especially by losing the 3 seats already secured in 2016 to NDC in 2020. Upper East Region became the first region across the country to start the process of filing for those interested in the position of MMDC, s in the region which later triggered the National Secretary John Boadu openly announced in one of his interview with Accra base station, that the national office did not sanction any regional executive to start such process. John Boadu also used the opportunity then, to caution interested candidates to be careful. However, vetting of these interested candidates has started across the country in batches with Upper East Region inclusive. In the Upper East Region alone, out of two hundred and thirty-seven (237) people who applied to occupy only (15) MMDCE positions in the region, 8 withdraw themselves from the race bringing the official number of aspirants to 229, and out of this, 15 are women, with 23 aspiring candidates in Binduri being the highest and the least being Nabdam with 7 aspirants. In the Garu district, a different and disturbing situation where a family consisting of father, son and mother all presented themselves to be considered as the District Chief Executive of Garu district. Meanwhile, other regions in the north such as the Savanah region received Eighty-three (83) applicants, Upper West region were one hundred and twenty-three (123), Northern region alone has two hundred and eight (208) applicants and North East region has on record seventy-one (71) applicants.
