Royalties: Leave the church alone – Patience Nyarko to GHAMRO
Gospel Musician Patience Nyarko has kicked against an intention by the Ghana Music Right Organisation (GHAMRO) to take royalties from churches for the use of music for services. GHAMRO said it is putting in place measures for churches to pay for any musical works used during service. Apart from churches, the music rights organisation also want to go after commercial transport owners who have entertainment systems in their cars. Kicking against the move on CTV’s entertainment show, The Showbiz, Patience Nyarko said the move on churches is wrong because gospel musicians have no original songs but record songs belonging to the churches. The Obi Nyanime hitmaker told show host Kojo Preko Dankwa that if the churches ask gospel musicians to stop recording or singing their songs or even ask every musician that has commercially recorded songs belonging to the church to pay royalties to them, that money will be so huge that the gospel musicians cannot pay. “So, please, they should leave the churches alone,” Ms Nyarko stated. She noted that taking royalties from the church will mar the relationship between gospel musicians and the churches. She, however, agreed with the move to charge transport owners royalties for the music they enjoy in their cars. “I agree with the transport bit because there are many cars in Ghana. If each car should pay GHS5 every year just like they pay for roadworthy certificates, GHAMRO can do a lot for musicians to be comfortable but they should leave the church alone,” she stressed. The dust has barely settled on the 2020-21 campaign, but already we’ve seen an unprecedented number of top managers on the move. In Germany, Flick’s departure from Bayern led to a series of changes, including Julian Nagelsmann replacing him and Jesse Marsch joining RB Leipzig. It has been a similar story across Italy, Spain, England and France since. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, German football journalist Raphael Honigstein said: “The common theme that links these resignations is, during Covid-19, we have seen much more internal arguments about money. “A lot of these coaches have walked out because, rather than having another job lined up, they’ve had enough.” He added: “There’s an extreme situation here that is very different to what usually happens in an off-season, especially at those big clubs. We don’t see big coaches walking away in these numbers. “Flick went after a huge disagreement over transfers and the backdrop is Covid-19. Bayern couldn’t spend the kind of money Flick wanted and that’s where the argument started.” La Liga runners-up Real Madrid topped KPMG’s study into Europe’s most valuable clubs, however Zidane did not feel backed by the board and president Florentino Perez, according to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague. It was a similar story at Inter, where Conte departed after delivering a first Italian title in 11 years because the club’s financial situation means they must reduce the wage bill by 20% this summer. Italian journalist Gabriele Marcotti said: “Conte wanted investment and made demands but instead of getting one or two big signings they have to sell one or two big players. “The mood has changed. Unless you’re Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp it’s very hard for you to make those demands. Marcotti added: “It’s cheaper to bring in a new manager than a bunch of new players. Obviously there is a chain reaction but undeniably a lot is about money, investment and the economy post-coronavirus. “It’s a part of why Zidane is no longer at Real, why Conte is no longer at Inter. It’s our reality for this transfer window which for managers and players will be very different.” Some are exhausted, others want new challenges Raised internal tensions are perhaps to be expected following an exhausting season that has forced clubs across Europe to contend with congested fixture schedules, after the previous campaign was disrupted by the pandemic. And despite some, such as Conte, bringing success despite those challenges, disagreement over transfer funds has proven a tipping point. Zidane failed to win a trophy but led an ageing Real side to within a point of the La Liga title, and a Champions League semi-final in which they were beaten by Chelsea. French football journalist Julien Laurens said: “This was a special season for Zidane because of everything that happened. He caught coronavirus. He took this Real team so far. “Maybe he felt it would be hard to do better than this. Perhaps this is what is at the heart for a lot of these managers changing – ‘Can we do better than we have done this season?’. “Galtier thought there’s no chance Lille would win Ligue 1 again next season. Why stay when you have other options? For Conte, maybe it’s the same.” Balague added: “The big clubs are changing managers and because big jobs are coming available, there are two or three managers who want to be available to be chosen. “Zidane got tired, he got exhausted. It has affected a lot of managers – certainly Zidane – even though they expect he will go to another job.” Who is heading where? With so many big-name managers on the move, there’s been no shortage of speculation surrounding who might end up where. Conte has been linked with Real Madrid and the vacancy at Premier League side Tottenham. Ghana’s debt stock hits GHS304.6bn
Latest figures from the Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Economic and Financial Data, show that Ghana’s debt stock rose by GHS13 billion to hit GHS304.6 billion as of March 2021, representing 70.2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The additional GHS13 billion debt came about between December 2020 and March 2021. The $3 billion Eurobond raised by the government in March substantially constituted to the GHS13 billion rise in debt. Ghana’s total debt stock, as of December 2020, was GHS291.6 billion. Of the total debt stock, the domestic debt is GHS163.6 (37.3% of GDP) as of the end of March 2021. It was GHS149.8 billion in December 2020. 2021 census to cost GHS521m
Ghana’s 2021 population and housing census will cost GHS521 million, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has said. Mr Ofori-Atta told a forum in Accra on Friday, 28 May 2021 that “of the budget of GHS 521.3 million, the government has already disbursed GHS 467.2 million” for the conduct of the census. “We will continue to ensure that the needed funds are provided to ensure a successful implementation”, he noted Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pleaded with Ghanaians not to spread misinformation or share untruths or controversial material about the upcoming census. He noted that the data collected will “enable us to measure the social and economic status of our nation, and to receive the invaluable inputs necessary for charting the roadmaps for achieving the targets and indicators envisioned in our national development agenda”. Nana Akufo-Addo noted that his government remains committed to evidence-based planning and decision-making across all spheres of development and will use this census data to gauge the extent to which “we have made progress on our national development agenda.” The president said these at the launch of the 30-day countdown to the census night in Accra on Friday. He stressed that the census will ensure that the country has the information needed to breathe life into its key constitutional provisions on equity and the promotion of interests of the marginalised and disadvantaged in society, in keeping with the governance structure. The census night is set for 27th June and persons on transit and in short-stay institutions such as hotels, guest houses and hospital, will also be counted on this night. However, the enumeration of persons in households and long-stay institutions will be enumerated from 28th June to 11th July. Fellow Ghanaians, Distinguished guests, Members of the press, Ladies and gentlemen, it gives me great pleasure to join you today as we begin the final preparations for Ghana’s 2021 Population and Housing Census. We were unable to conduct the Census in March last year, exactly 10 years since the previous one in 2010 as recommended by the United Nations, due to COVID-19 related challenges. We are now all set to continue the national tradition of conducting censuses successfully. Census officials have been competitively recruited and are undergoing comprehensive and skillful training and preparations to be ready for the exercise. Field data collection will start with the listing of structures from 13th June. The Census Night is set for 27th June; persons on transit and in short-stay institutions such as hotels, guest houses and hospital in-patients will also be counted on this night. However, the enumeration of persons in households and long-stay institutions will be enumerated from 28th June to 11th July. It is important for everyone to remember the Census Night because they will be counted according to where they spend the Census Night in Ghana. I also want to emphasise that you do not have to move or change your location, Census officials will visit all structures and places of residence and count ALL persons who spend the Census Night in Ghana regardless of their residence status. Use of tablets and internet to capture and transfer the information respectively will guarantee delivery of high quality and faster results to support the decision-making process; (2) Use of rich geospatial information, including capturing the Geographic Positioning System (GPS) coordinates of all structures will improve resource targeting to areas that need them the most; (3) Use of online dashboards and comprehensive data quality assurance procedures, including the use of real-time enumeration and data quality monitoring to ensure every structure and person is counted, which will guarantee complete and accurate data to ensure that we Leave No One Behind in sharing national resources; (4) Information will be collected in several new and important areas such as housing and living conditions, water and sanitation, and difficulty in performing activities of daily living, information that will further support the tracking of key national and global development goals; (5) Halve the period between end of data collection and release of results; and (6) It will be the first time we shall receive census information tabulated by our Constituencies to improve progress tracking within this important governance structure. Ladies and Gentlemen, further, in the spirit of leaving no one behind, the census shall feature several new areas and focus on the disadvantaged members of our society, such as persons living with disabilities (PLWDs), orphanhood and vulnerable children, the elderly and even street of 5 families. Our constitution is emphatic that the fruits of nationhood and progress must be accessible to all without discrimination, and for equitable provision of social and other services. The Census data will provide us with information related to distances to hospitals, schools, market centres, and even major service roads as well as adequacy of housing stock. Corporal Frederick Kwaku Dzemeki, a Police officer has been dragged before his superiors for his social media comment. He is facing sanctions for allegedly insulting President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Facebook, Police wireless message has said. Corporal Frederick Kwaku Dzemeki stationed at Prampram has been charged with misconduct by the Tema Regional Police Command. The officer was said to have comment under the Facebook show hosted by Broadcaster, Captain Smart. “Our leaders are very stupid and stubborn. They don’t reason at all. Ghana is sick. Number 1 is sick and number two too is sick,” Dzemeki commented under the Facebook show. Akufo-Addo convenes ECOWAS Extraordinary Summit on Mali’s renewed political crisis
President Akufo-Addo is convening an extraordinary summit of ECOWAS on the renewed political crisis in Mali. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, announced this to the media at a press briefing held at the Information Ministry on Saturday morning, May 29, 2021. According to her, 10 heads of state and Governments will be attending the summit in Accra tomorrow, Sunday, May 30, 2021. The President of Senegal, Macky Sall, will be represented by his Foreign Affairs Minister, she revealed. The republic of Benin, she said, has confirmed participation. She said in line with the ECOWAS protocol on democracy and good governance, President Nana Akufo-Addo is convening the summit. The purpose of the summit is to enable the authorities deliberate and take consequential decision on the evolving security situation in Mali, according to her. She added that one of the mediators of the Mali’s political crisis, former President Goodluck Jonathan, will report to the summit tomorrow on the outcome of his fact-finding mission to Mali. She expressed hope that all political actors in Mali will accept the outcome of the Summit to ensure. Mr Akufo-Addo will be chairing the summit in his capacity as Chairman of ECOWAS. It will be the second time Mr Akufo-Addo is hosting an extraordinary summit on Mali. The summit took place in 2020 at the Peduase Presidential Lodge in Aburi, Eastern Region of Ghana. ‘Release President, Prime Minister’ Already, the Mediators of ECOWAS in the Malian crisis, including former President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria, have demanded the immediate release of the transitional president and Prime Minister of Mali. The Mediators made the call in a communique. In the Communique directly made available to the media outlets by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana, the mediators requested that President Bah N’Daw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane, should be released. Mali’s transitional leaders were on Monday, May 24, 2021, stripped off their powers by the army. Since then, the President and Prime Minister have been in detention. According to the foreign Minister, at the end of the summit tomorrow, a Communique will be issued. At the behest of the President of the Republic, an ECOWAS Mediation team, led by H.E. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, ECOWAS Special Envoy and Mediator for Mali, embarked on a fact-finding mission to Mali from 25th to 26th May, 2021 to assess the situation and explore opportunities for the resolution of the crisis. H.E. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will, therefore, report to the Summit on the outcome of the mission. May I indicate that the convening of the Extraordinary Session demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the President of the Republic towards addressing the political situation in Mali. “It would be recalled that barely a week after his assumption of office as Chair of the ECOWAS Authority, H.E. the President, convened an emergency Summit, held at Peduase, in response to the military intervention, which saw the ousting of the then President H.E. Ibrahim Boubacar Keita on 18th August, 2020. That meeting took important decisions, including a demand on the Malian authorities to ensure that the Transition Government was Civilian-led and should last for a period of eighteen (18) months, with effect from 15th September, 2020. The Summit also affirmed that once a civilian-led transition government had assumed office, ECOWAS within the context of its protocols will assist Mali to return to democratic governance. Summon AG over gov’t’s burning of excavator– Minority to Speaker
Haruna Iddrisu the Minority Leader has said the Speaker of Parliament, “in accordance with article 88 of the Constitution”, must summon Attorney General Godfred Dame to the legislature, “as the principal advisor to the government”, to explain why President Nana Akufo-Addo “must not be held in check” for “being in breach of the laws of Ghana, and also provide some evidence to prove that [the] burning of excavators is sanctioned”. Mr Iddrisu argued that the president must lead according to the laws of Ghana. “We want him to lead the lawful Republic of Ghana in accordance with his oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of Ghana and to hold himself accountable to the laws of Ghana”, Mr Iddrisu said, adding: “No laws in Ghana, today, permit the burning of excavators”. Despite an avalanche of criticism against his style of fighting galamsey, the president insists on the burning of excavators and all other equipment used for illegal small-scale mining once seized by the Operation Halt II team. The president recently asked Ghanaians who disagree with his approach to proceed to court for redress. Speaking for the first time on the matter at a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of the Law Village Project in Accra on Wednesday, 26 April 2021, Nana Akufo-Addo justified his approach and urged Ghanaians to support his government to put an end to galamsey. The President said: “I know there are some who believe that the ongoing exercise of ridding our water bodies and forest zones of harmful equipment and machinery is unlawful and, in some cases, harsh”. “I strongly disagree, and I would advise those who take a contrary view to go to court to vindicate their position if they so wish. That is what the rule of law is all about.” “The Ghana Law Reports of modern times are littered with cases in which my clients thought it necessary to challenge government action. On the majority of occasions, the courts upheld my contentions, in a few others, they did not. The rule of law, he said “does not recognise social status, religious persuasion, political affiliation, ethnic origins or regional adherence” but “merely the law and precedent, the ancient common law doctrine of stare decisis”. President Akufo-Addo noted that any person who, without a valid licence, conveys any equipment onto a piece of land purportedly to conduct activities for the search, reconnaissance, prospecting, exploration or mining of a mineral, commits a grievous crime against the law. He said: “Indeed, a person in possession of a valid licence but undertakes mining in water bodies or mines unlawfully, in protected forest zones also commits an illegality”. “Apart from criminal violations of Act 703, the activities of such persons desecrate our environment, pollute our water bodies, and endanger the lives of present and future generations of Ghanaians”. “They are monumental crimes which should not be condoned in any shape or form.” He continued that the presence of chanfans in water bodies is illegal, as is the unlawful use of excavators in protected forest zones. “The devastation caused by these equipment is nothing short of evil, and we should not compromise in our efforts to protect our environment, forest reserves and water bodies,” he said. Nana Akufo-Addo stressed: “I say with all the emphasis at my command that no rights can accrue to or flow from the criminal venture of galamsey.
