The Senate finally broke its silence on the Federal Government ban on Twitter microblogging platform on Friday when its President, Ahmad Lawan, said Nigeria needs the social media platform just as it needs the country. NDC@29: We shall restore core values of the party – Koku Anyidoho
A former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Mr Koku Anyidoho has said in relation to the 29th anniversary celebration that the grassroots will ensure that the principles of the party are restored. The NDC celebrated the anniversary on Thursday June 10. In a tweet, Mr Anyidoho said “Today, June 10, is the birthday of the NDC. All committed cadres who FOUNDED the NDC & all true loyalists, shall ensure the toils/gains of Presidents Rawlings & Atta-Mills, do not waste away. “We SHALL restore the core values of the NDC & bring back pride & dignity to the Party.” Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the NDC, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said Former President John Dramani Mahama is the only President produced by the National Democratic Congress who is alive and so the party is looking up to him for direction and inspiration. Election violence: I’m building a house for families of some victims – Adjei-Mensah Korsah
The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Techiman South constituency, Mr. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, says measures have been put in place to secure justice for persons who suffered brutalities in the area during the 2020 general elections. The Techiman South legislator, who has been nominated by President Nana Akufo-Addo as Deputy Minister for the Local Government Ministry, made this known when he appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Friday, June 11, 2021. Mr. Adjei-Mensah Korsah said he will do everything to ensure that the constituency is peaceful. “What happened is one very unfortunate incident that characterized our election in Techiman South. We had engaged in a campaign devoid of tensions, acrimony, and there was so much unity among the parties. The election came to a close, and just at the very end which was the declaration point, there were some misunderstandings, and a confrontation ensued between some of my constituents and the security agencies leading to this unfortunate.” “We have taken a number of steps to understand exactly what happened and seek justice for those who were affected so that it doesn’t repeat itself.” Mr. Korsah also disclosed that he is personally building a house for the families of some victims. He also added that he paid for the hospital bills of the other victims who were hospitalised. “The event, as sad as it was, has brought us together. I personally as the father of the constituency have taken some measures to support the family to cushion them. One young man lost his life, the parents are sitting behind me in support of my vetting. That is the peace we want in Techiman South.” “We have also decided as a measure of support to provide shelter for the family of one of the victims, and as a result of that, a four-bedroom [flat] is being put up for them and the same is also being done for the other family. For those who got injured, some hospital bills are being paid to support them.” What happened in Techiman South? Two persons lost their lives in the Techiman South constituency after being struck by warning shots from security personnel, while six others sustained gunshot wounds. The incident started after a misunderstanding ensued over the declaration of the election results. The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, was declared the winner in the polls, sparking agitation from some NDC supporters. The NDC maintains that it won the parliamentary polls in the area and has claimed that National Democratic Congress (NDC) insists it won the seat. As a result, the party is in court protesting the result as announced by the Electoral Commission (EC). NPP members petition Interior Ministry to probe Techiman South election violence Members of the New Patriotic Party in the Techiman South constituency in March 2021, petitioned the Interior Ministry to investigate the shooting incident that occurred on the 8th of December 2020 at the Techiman South Collation Centre, which led to the death of two people. The group believes the investigation will help the constituents know exactly what caused the unfortunate event and give the victims justice. According to the Techiman South NPP Youth Group, an earlier call on the Interior Ministry for investigations into the post-election violence in their constituency had not yielded any results, hence the need for them to officially petition the Ministry. We’ll examine BoG’s response – Committee probing uniBank, UT Bank collapse
The Chairman of the bi-partisan parliamentary committee probing the collapse of UT Bank and uniBank, Joe Osei Owusu, says a response it received from the Bank of Ghana with regard to the case will be carefully considered as the committee continues with its work. He said the Bank of Ghana’s response does not necessarily mean the central bank has declined an invitation extended to it to assist the committee with its work. Through its lawyers, the Bank of Ghana, among other things explained that the petitioners, Prince Kofi Amoabeng and Dr Kwabena Duffour, who are the owners of the two defunct banks, are only seeking to use Parliament to have its decision reviewed. The central bank insisted that its decision to revoke the licences of uniBank and UT Bank was taken in accordance with statutory powers it draws from the Banks and Specialised Deposit Taking Institutions (BSDTI) Act, 2016 (Act 930). “The BSDTI Act provides how persons who are aggrieved with such decisions may seek redress for their grievances, and the prescribed resolution mechanisms do not include recourse to Parliament.” Some watchers of the space had interpreted the BoG’s response as a way of refusing to honour the invitation extended to it by the parliamentary committee. Joe Osei Owusu, the chairman of the ad-hoc committee, in a Citi News interview, said his team will meet to examine the response and request additional details if need be. “We received the Bank of Ghana’s response to the petition. We asked them to respond to the petition, and they have responded. The committee will put them together and consider them, and we will consider whether we need to do more and if yes, what are we going to do more on.” Background Former stakeholders of the banks, Prince Kofi Amoabeng and Dr. Kwabena Duffuor petitioned Parliament to investigate the conduct of the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Stock Exchange in the revocation of the licences of UT Bank as well as uniBank and delisting them from the country’s stock exchange. The petition also sought the restoration of the licences of these banks. The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, subsequently constitute a nine-member committee to look into the petition presented to the House. This was after the petition was officially brought before him by the Bawku Central legislator, Mahama Ayariga. Why were the banks collapsed? Dr. Duffuor, founder of the now-defunct uniBank and Mr. Amoabeng, former Chief Executive Officer of collapsed UT bank, had the licences of their respective financial institutions revoked during the banking sector clean-up which commenced in 2017. For UT Bank, the apex bank claimed it took the action against the institution because it was insolvent and was unable to recapitalize despite several assurances from the company’s shareholders. The apex bank also gave similar reasons for the revocation of uniBank’s licence, saying the financial institution was significantly undercapitalised. C/R: Robbers kill man, 26, injure 2 others
Agona Swedru Police has received information of an armed robbery attack on sand winners at Gomoa Manso, a suburb of Agona Swedru in the Central region. The incident occurred on 7 June 2021. Police proceeded to the scene and found a man, aged about 26, wearing grey jeans and a red Shirt, dead, behind the steering wheel of the pay-loader machine. The body was inspected and there was a deep gunshot wound on his right chin. Enquiries at the scene indicated that the deceased, identified as Kwame Abeiku, was the operator of the wheel loader machine working at Gomoa Manso sand wining site. The deceased was returning the machine to Gomoa Manso town with other occupants on board They were attacked by three armed men with short barrel gun and a lady on their way back. The alleged robbers shot and killed the loader operator instantly. They robbed other occupants of unspecified amount of money and escaped through the bush. Victims Emmanuel Asare, aged 55, and Charles Aidoo, aged 20, who sustained minor injuries are currently on admission at Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital receiving treatment. The body of the deceased has been deposited at Swedru Municipal Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Green Ghana Project: Asantehene plants first tree in Ashanti region
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II today planted a tree, as part of the Green Ghana Project. The project is aimed at planting five million trees in a day across the country. His daughter, Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem Osei Tutu, also planted a tree to celebrate her 16th birthday today. The trees were planted during a short ceremony organised by the forestry commission to commence tree planting at the Royal Golf Park at Danyame in the Kumasi Metropolis of the Ashanti region. Other dignitaries who also planted trees include the Deputy Minister-Designate for Lands and Natural Resources, Benito Owusu Bio; Ashanti regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah; the regional Forestry Manager, Augustine Gyedu among others. The Ashanti region planned to plant 1 million trees but according to the Regional Forestry Manager, Augustine Gyedu, seedlings distributed across the region have exceeded the target by 200,000 due to high demand for the seedlings. The Deputy Minister-Designate for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Benito Owusu Bio complained about the severe degradation of the forest reserves due to illegal mining activities, illegal logging, bush fires and bad agricultural practices. He stressed the need for Ghanaians to participate in the government’s Green Ghana Project to restore and protect the degraded forest cover. Nothing wrong mining in forests – Duker
A Deputy Minister-designate of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr George Mireku Duker, has said there is nothing wrong with mining in the country’s forest reserves. He said there was no law that prevented mining in the forests and that the law even allowed for mining in selected forest reserves. Appearing before the Appointments Committee of Parliament, he said, “In 1900, we had about eight million hectares of forest cover and out of that, we gazetted 1.6 million hectares and that is what we have been protecting. “The remaining are for development purposes like farming and so on. So we need to see how we can take advantage of the opportunities from these reserves. “Mining prudently in forest reserves that are dedicated for development is not against the law. The onus is on us to ensure that we have a legislative framework that will guide mining processes and make sure we mine professionally.” When asked if he supported mining in the forest, he said, “It depends on the area dedicated for the purpose. If the area is earmarked for mining, there is nothing wrong with it.” Creating artificial forests Mr Duker said the country could look at the possibility of creating artificial forests to make up for the depletion of the forest reserves. “My concern is how we can also look at creating artificial forests,” he stated. He said the country could designate specific areas and turn them into artificial forests. Ratification of mining concessions The deputy minister-designate said when approved, he would assist his minister to ensure that all large mining concessions were ratified by Parliament before they started operations. Article 268 of the 1992 Constitution compels all mining concessions to be ratified by Parliament before the start of operations. “Ratification of mineral rights has been a major concern for Parliament and as a member of the Mines and Energy Committee in Parliament, I was part of the people who insisted that we ratify all concessions before they start operations. “If approved to support the sector minister, we will insist that all concessions are ratified by Parliament before operations. As a member of the Mines Committee, we supported and engineered a lot of the concessions to be ratified and I know not less than 20 of the large-scale concessions have been ratified in Parliament and we will continue to insist that we get the concessions ratified before they start operations,” he assured. Agyapa deal As the Chairman of the Mineral Investment Income Fund, Mr Duker said he was part of numerous discussions on the Agyapa deal. “I was the chairman of the board and I did so passionately. Coming from a mineral generation community in Tarkwa Nsuem, having been there all this while and not seeing development, and taking into consideration the mineral revenue from that community, seeing the idea of coming up with a vehicle that was passed in Parliament to create Agyapa was exciting. “I was excited by the development but sad it could not materialise,” he stated. On what would have happened to the chiefs who were supposed to benefit from the sharing of the minerals income had Agyapa gone through, he said nothing would have changed. “That wouldn’t have stopped. It was 75 per cent of the minerals income that was going to Agyapa and 20 per cent of the total receipts would be dedicated to the Minerals Development Fund.
