Suicide: Man, 25, hangs himself
A 25-year-old man, Kofi Akwa, has allegedly committed suicide by hanging at Kokoben in the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region. The incident occurred on Saturday, 12 June 2021, around 10 am. Akwa was found hanging by a rope tied to a ceiling fan hook in an uncompleted building. The Assemblymember for the area, Mr Kwarteng Ernest, told Class News’ regional correspondent Elisha Adarkwah that the deceased climbed to the top of the ceiling with a ladder and tied the rope before he hanged himself. The body has been conveyed by the police to the Emina Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy. The police has commenced investigations into the incident. South-East Mocks Buhari, As They Flooded Dot-In-Circle Shirts, Caps After Threatening Statement
T-shirts and caps bearing dot-in-circle images have surfaced in the South-East states after President Muhammadu Buhari described the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a dot in a circle which could not secede from the country. SaharaReporters saw the images of the clothes and caps with “Onye dot” written on them in a satirical reference to Buhari’s reference to IPOB agitators in his interview last Thursday with Arise Television. It is not yet clear who the producers of the branded shirts are. President Buhari had threatened that his government had mobilised and would continue to mobilise the military and the police to go after the IPOB accused of disturbing the peace in the South-East region. He had said that IPOB is “just like a dot in a circle and they have nowhere to turn to. They are spread everywhere and they have investments and properties everywhere and in other areas. “They don’t know what they are doing. How we will handle them is to mobilise the police and the military to go after them.” Also, Buhari had slammed those calling for the sovereignty of the Biafra and Oduduwa Republics, saying they were ignorant. The president stated that he expected them to be thinking of how to be suggesting initiatives to attract investors to the country. The IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu, has been clamouring for the sovereign nation of Biafra as a result of alleged marginalisation, killings and hatred being shown to Igbo people. In the same manner, Oyo-based rights activist and businessman, Sunday Igboho has gained massive support in the South-West in his demand for Oduduwa Republic for Yoruba people. Buhari during the interview said those agitators are delusional in their thinking as they neglect the issue of resources for Nigerians to survive. “Yes, I think of Nigeria. Commitee tasked to monitor nurturing, growth of trees planted under Green Ghana Project
Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, says a committee has been set up to monitor the successful nurturing and growth of the over five million trees planted on Friday, June 11, 2021, as part of the Green Ghana Project. The Committee is chaired by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Forestry Commission, John Allotey. Under the auspices of the Forestry Commission and the Lands and Natural Resources Ministry, the government of Ghana commenced the nationwide tree planting exercise to restore Ghana’s greenery and preserve the environment The program after its launch on Friday, June 11, 2021, saw many influential Ghanaians and members of the public plant trees in their homes, schools, and other designated areas in support of the initiative. Mr. Jinapor in a Citi News interview after the exercise said the Committee will ensure that the trees are nurtured and given the needed attention to grow. Frustration from economic hardship under NPP inspired #FixTheCountry campaign – Elvis Afriyie Ankrah
The Director of Elections for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie, believes the current economic challenges being experienced by citizens under the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) inspired the recent social media campaign, #Fixthecountry. The #Fixthecountry protesters have largely lamented the country’s inadequate or non-existent amenities, deplorable infrastructure, poor sanitary conditions, a housing deficit accompanied by exorbitant rent, high cost of living, and high levels of unemployment with its attendant problems. Mr. Afriyie said the campaign served as an avenue for citizens to express their frustrations over the poor conditions of living under the current government. “It is obvious this has been an organic movement that has sprung up out of the conviction of several young people and the realities they face in their daily lives. I was just speaking to a former NUGS executive this dawn, and she was telling me she was still looking for a job, and so it should tell you that so many Ghanaians are going through very serious hardships. All this is happening against the backdrop of what we believe has been serious mismanagement of the economy. “ Debt stock increases Citing examples of the governing NPP’s supposed mismanagement of the economy, Mr. Afriyie expressed concern about Ghana’s total debt stock, which currently stands at GHS 304 billion. The new debt figure brings Ghana’s debt to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio to 70.2% as of the end of March 2021. “Within these past few months, the debt has risen to GHS 304 billion. What it means is that the NPP has borrowed over 183 billion within four years and a few months. What do they have to show for it?” he quizzed. The #fixthecountry campaign started on Twitter and other social media platforms, where protesters expressed outrage about economic hardship and the level of underdevelopment brought on by successive governments. The protesters have been faced with a number of challenges, including an injunction filed by the Police against a planned protest. Sack Health Minister over messy Sputnik-V vaccine procurement deal – Martin Kpebu to Akufo-Addo
A Private Legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has called on President Akufo-Addo to sack the Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman Manu. According to him, the Minister has not shown prudence in the handling of the procurement of the Sputnik – V vaccine for the national inoculation exercise. A Norwegian news tabloid, Verdens Gang, reported that Ghana has made a request to purchase 3.4 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine through two businessmen who are selling it to Ghana at $19 per dose instead of the $10 per dose on the international market. This has generated public uproar, with the Minority in Parliament and others calling for the cancellation of the deal. However, the government has explained that it could not secure the vaccines directly from the manufacturer, hence the need to go through some middlemen, and that explains why the cost is higher than the standard price of the Russian vaccine. But Martin Kpebu in an interview Citi News insisted that the Health Minister has failed in that regard. He said the least the President can do is to sack him. “He should know that Ghanaians are very vigilant; so this one, I think the Health Minister has been too sloppy and the least the President can do is to sack him. The President should know that we are very angry with what the Health Minister has done, he has not shown prudence at all and has also shown no sensitivity to how Ghanaians react to issues of money.” The Minority in Parliament is demanding the immediate abrogation of the contract. SAD: Forest guard mistakenly shoots himself dead
Seidu Benjamin a 29-year-old forest guard with the Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission, has mistakenly shot himself dead at Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti region. The incident occurred on Friday, June 11, 2021, during the Green Ghana Project to plant trees across the country. The deceased together with his colleague workers from the Forestry Commission were on their way to plant trees as part of the Green Ghana Project. The Assembly Member for the area, Sulemana Abubakar told Class News’ regional correspondent Elisha Adarkwah that the deceased was the only person who was sitting in the bucket of a pick-up car they were travelling in to plant the trees. The deceased was said to have loaded his gun and placed it vertically upwards with the muzzle facing up. Sulemana said, according to a report by colleagues of the deceased, the gun triggered and killed the deceased when the tyre of the moving vehicle hit a pothole. The gun fired immediately into his jaw killing him on the spot. The case was reported to the Kumawu Police Command which has commenced investigations into the accident.
