Widnaba: Angry youth burns 18 houses of Fulanis over alleged robberies
Some angry youth in Widnaba and adjoining communities in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region have torched several houses belonging to Fulani settlers. They accused the Fulanis of the several robberies and snatching of motorbikes in the area. Ali Sulemana, a resident told this reporter that last Saturday around 2:00AM in the midnight some community members stormed their area on tricycles destroying houses and properties belong to the Fulanis. According to him, 18 houses were completely burned to ashes. He added that other properties including their health insurance cards, documents and cash amounting to Ghc300,000 have been burnt. Ali noted that women and children had to seek shelter in the bush till the Zebilla police intervened. Another victim Haruna Sulemana said their foodstuff and motorbikes were burnt to ashes. The Upper East Regional Police Commander, DOP Dr Syibu Papi Gariba told ModernGhana News that the attacks are unwarranted. He said the police have commenced investigations and the perpetrators will be arrested and punished accordingly. The Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Stephen Yakubu assured the Fulani community of maximum security. He added that the police will investigate the matter and persons found culpable will be made to face the law. He has directed the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the area to take stock of all those who lost their health insurance cards and other valuable items for a replacement. The National Organizer of the Fulani Association in Ghana, Armed Barry has sympathised with the affected victims and called for calm. The Paramount Chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area and President of the Kusaug Traditional Council, Zugraana Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II in a speech read on his behalf also called for calm. A private legal practitioner, Lawyer Sampson Lardi Anyenini says he is shocked the petition by the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) to have Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah removed traveled that wide. ASEPA few weeks ago petitioned the Presidency and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to investigate the CJ after a Lawyer Akwasi Afrifa fingered him in a US$5million bribery allegation. Although CHRAJ took up the matter and starting investigations, it has through a letter to ASEPA noted that it won’t continue with the probe. Making reference to another petition file by ASEPA to the office of the President for the impeachment of the CJ, CHRAJ says it will not want to crisscross the work of the committee set up to look into the matter. “Since the matter is pending in the appropriate constitutional forum, the Commission, in exercise of its discretion under Section 13 of Act 456, hereby ceases to investigate the complaint any further as the invocation of the Article 146 proceedings has effectively taken the matter out the forum of the Commission” part of the Commission’s letter to ASEPA has said. ASEPA’s petition to the President to remove the Chief Justice over allegations of the $5 million bribe has also been thrown out on Monday, August 23. After receiving a report from a committee that looked into the matter to find out if there was a prima facie case, President Akufo-Addo said the petition lacked basis. The report concluded that ASEPA’s petition for the removal of the Chief Justice on the grounds of “stated misbehavior” is “frivolous and vexatious”, “does not meet the prima facie standard envisaged under Article 146 (6) of the Constitution and thus, ought to be dismissed in limine”. Having monitored the development in the media and the report of the committee, Lawyer Sampson Lardi Anyenini has shared his thoughts on ASEPA v CJ matter. According to him, he is shocked the petition travelled this length and received this much attention when it was only based on rumours and not facts. “I have just done a quick read through a 12-page (+cover letter) prima facie determination on the petition for removal of the CJ. It supports my prediction and professional expectation,” a post on the Facebook post of Lawyer Sampson Lardi Anyenini has said. It continues, “But I am sincerely shocked it got this much attention – 12-pages?! John Mahama supports RTU with Ghc 50,000 as he says ‘THANK YOU’ to Northern Region
John Mahama Ghana’s former President has given GHS50,000 to Real Tamale United (RTU) to assist them to get ready for the upcoming Premier League. Mr. Mahama made the donation during his ‘THANK YOU’ in the Northern Region of Ghana. “I want to take this opportunity to congratulate RTU on qualifying to the Premier League and to say that we are all supporters of RTU”. “And, as the Regional Minister said, let us all come together to support the pride of the north”, adding: “That’s our team”. “And, so, between me and the NDC group in parliament led by leader Haruna Iddrisu, we are going to make a donation of GHS50,000 to RTU to prepare for the Premier League”, Mr. Mahama said. Agenda 111: Prioritize making Wa hospital & others fully operational- JM to Akufo-Addo
Former President and 2020 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has asked President Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure the full operationalization of the Upper West Regional Hospital in Wa. This, he says, will ensure that as a referral facility the hospital can adequately address the health needs of the people in the region. Responding to the remarks of the Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, who lamented the lack of some key infrastructure in the region, the former President requested that the Akufo-Addo government provides the required seed money to fully operationalize the Regional Hospital. “Since he commissioned it, the hospital has not been given seed money to operate fully. And so it is not operating at full capacity. That is supposed to be the regional hospital, the major referral hospital for the people of the Upper West” he bemoaned. With the Covid-19 pandemic stretching the nation’s existing health facilities, the former President, who is in the region to thank the people for their support for him and his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, and the NDC Parliamentary Candidates, called for re-prioritization of all such projects that are ready to be used. “While we think about building more hospitals, we must quickly utilize the capacity that we have already. Because it will be a lack of prioritization if you have a wholly built regional hospital with all equipment that you need there and you can’t operationalize it and yet prioritize the construction of new hospitals.” He, therefore, pressed for the government to “prioritize getting this hospital fully operational so that people can have access to good health care.” President Mahama spent the whole of Monday in the region meeting stakeholders and NDC party supporters and executives to thank them for their votes.
