Enroll Smallholder Farmers into Pensions-NPRA
The National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) is advocating for the urgent need for smallholder farmers in Ghana to be roped into the informal sector pension schemes to ensure that they had a decent retirement income. Speaking on the relevance of pensions to smallholder farmers during the 11th edition of the Annual Pre-harvest and Agribusiness Exhibition in Tamale in the Northern Region, a Corporate Affairs Officer of the Tamale Zonal Office of the NPRA, MrAbdulai Abdul-Rahaman, underscored the important role of smallholder farmers in Ghana’s quest to become self-sufficient in food production. He said while these smallholder farmers’ majority of whom were women and contributing to feeding Ghanaians, it was important for them to plan towards their retirement from the farming activities. According to Abdul-Rahaman it was better for smallholder farmers to manage smaller pension contributions and gradually increase their contributions overtime instead of starting with bigger contributions which cannot be sustained overtime. He advised that, smallholder famers who enroll with any third-tier pension scheme of their choice should not be looking at starting with a higher contribution, but should start with small and manageable daily, weekly or monthly contributions which would not affect their farming business and which they can sustain overtime. Mr. Abdul-Rahaman encouraged them to embrace the Group/Personal Pension Schemes as they were guaranteed of good and quality returns from the little contributions they made over a time until they retired. Mr Abdul-Rahaman, appealed to Outgrower Business Owners to encourage the smallholder farmers under them to enroll with the various informal sector pensions scheme by putting aside some small amount of money towards their retirement in future and that should not be too big a burden and hence must be done with small and manageable amounts and gradually increased based on an increased income from increased production. The passionate Corporate Affairs Officer of the Tamale Zonal Office, said old a poverty was a reality and for one to escape it called for proper retirement planning and investment in pensions, adding that despite the complains of inadequate pensions by some pensioners, no pensioner has so far discounted the relevance of pensions in their lives. Explaining the types of informal sector pension schemes to the participants, Mr. Abdul-Rahaman said smallholder farmers could join and contribute to a scheme of their choice as individuals or group. He added that, once a member (individual or group) joins a scheme two operational accounts (personal savings accounts and retirement accounts) would be created for the member. He explained that, the contribution of the member would be split into the two accounts in line with the scheme rule, adding that the law allowed a contributor to contribute any amount that she or he can afford. He further entreated smallholder farmers to take advantage of the tax exemptions that comes with pensions contributions under the third-tier informal sector scheme. Akufo-Addo’s response to Aflao chief in bad taste – MP
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency in the Volta Region has expressed her disgust at the president’s response to the Paramount of Aflao traditional area. Reduce radius from 100km to 45km fight: NCA floors Multimedia again, slapped with Ghc5,000 cost by Appeals Court
The Court of Appeal has ruled against Multimedia Group, operators of Joy FM and Bell Communication, operator of Asempa FM in a case against National Communication Authority (NCA) over the reduction of frequency coverage radius from 100km to 45km. In 2012, the NCA conducted an FM station spectrum audit and as a result reclassified the maximum coverage for FM stations. The Authority, after extensive stakeholder consultation, directed commercial FM Station operators to reduce their maximum frequency coverage radius from 100km to 45km. The Multimedia Group and Bell Communication, however, proceeded to court to contest the directive. The High Court in June 2019, held that the NCA had the mandate to deal with matters of reduction of radius and coverage of FM Stations. Dissatisfied with the High Court decision, Multimedia Group and Bell Communication filed a judicial review at the Court of Appeal. The Court of Appeal unanimously held that the NCA acted within its mandate when it reduced the maximum radius within which commercial FM stations should operate from 100 kilometres to 45 kilometres. The three-member panel presided over by Justice Henry Kwofie, also held that the NCA had the full legal mandate to undertake FM reclassification policy. Additionally, the Court said there was sufficient evidence of prior consultation with the key stakeholders’ involvement of NCA reclassification policy, a statement issued by the NCA said, Thursday. The Court said the appellants, the Multimedia Group, operators of Joy FM and Bell Communication, operator of Asempa FM, “failed to demonstrate that the NCA policy of reclassification of frequency coverage was unreasonable and neither have been able to establish that same was arbitrary.” “There are no proven grounds to reverse the decision of the High Court on the matter,” it stated. There’s no space to admit you into law school – Akufo-Addo to 499 law students
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says there is no space to admit the 499 law students who were denied admission despite attaining the 50 percent threshold in the Ghana Legal Council (GLC) examinations. Describing the situation as unfortunate, the President said government is working to resolve the challenge. “For the time being, there is no space in the law school for them. There are several others who unfortunately fell into the same pit. Maybe this group has been more vocal than their predecessors.” “I think the idea of more lawyers in the system is good for the health of the nation. We want a country that is governed by the rule of law. It means we need to have lawyers in all aspects of our national life guiding the development of our country. The conversation is ongoing and I am hoping that soon or later a solution will be found,” he said in an interview on Peace FM. The 499 candidates who sat for the 2021 examinations were failed after a new quota system was introduced by the GLC. The new quota requires candidates to pass 50% in each of the A and B sections in the exam. The affected candidates have since been agitating and calling on the GLC to give admission to all 499 students who attained the 50 percent pass mark. The President admitted that reserving admissions for just a select few will not serve the country’s interest. “I myself, I think that idea of more and more lawyers in the system is good for the health of the nation. If we want a country that is governed by the rule of law, it means that we need to have lawyers in virtually all aspects of our national life guiding the development of our country so that the rule of law really makes sense,” he said. He believes it is a reasonable expectation for Ghanaians to demand a solution from him due to his status as a celebrated lawyer. “I think it’s a decent, reasonable expectation; I will not run away from it. Donald Trump to launch new social media platform
Former US President Donald Trump, who has himself banned by multiple social media companies, has announced that he will launch his own platform called TRUTH Social, with access limited to invited guests. “I created TRUTH Social … to stand up to the tyranny of Big Tech. We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favourite American President has been silenced,” Trump said in the statement. “Everyone asks me why doesn’t someone stand up to Big Tech? Well, we will be soon!” he added. Trump said that the company’s mission is “to create a rival to the liberal media consortium and fight back against the Big Tech companies of Silicon Valley, which have used their unilateral power to silence opposing voices in America.” According to a press statement issued by Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG), a beta version of Trump’s new mouth piece will launch in November, and will have a “nationwide rollout” in the first quarter of 2022. Trump was shunned by multiple social media platforms over posts they believed incited violence and led directly to the attack on the US Capitol in January, leaving five people dead.
