Currently, the Director-General of the Public Affairs Directorate, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Kwasi Ofori, said, they had acquired a printing machine to emboss the names of personnel on uniforms. He noted that the present leadership of the police was committed to ensuring smooth cooperation between the public and personnel. He was briefing the media in Accra on the focus of a meeting, held at the behest of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo Dampare, between the leadership of the police and editors yesterday. The police, ACP Ofori said, was committed to fostering a closer relationship with the media which, for years, have been a traditional ally of the security agency. As part of efforts to renew and intensify the relationship between the media and police, he stated that, concerns about policing by the media would be tackled head-on. “This meeting is for the police to listen to our media partners and what they think can be done to improve policing. “The IGP is focused on creating that needed collaboration between the police and media to further improve policing in the country,” ACP Ofori noted. The police, he noted, was pursuing an open-door policy that promote cooperation with groups that were critical in advancing effective security operations. “The police is building a friendly and accommodating posture. A paradigm shift toward creating a good working environment between the police and the media and Ghanaians at large,” he added. Speaking on behalf of the editors, Ben Ephson, Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper, noted that the meeting was an opportunity to rekindle the trust between the police and the media and iron out concerns that threaten the relationship between the two institutions. He explained that an effective police agency required the efforts of stakeholders, including the media to enable it adequately serve the needs of the citizenry. “Let’s all play our part to help the police to serve us better. It only means that we’re furthering cooperation and keeping them on their toes as well,” he stated. Adongo goes around to say that this digitization does not put money into the pockets of the ordinary Ghanaian. US deputy national security boss visits Ghana
The U.S. deputy national security advisor Daleep Singh visited Accra recently to discuss President Biden’s Build Back Better World initiative with stakeholders and to meet with the Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. Singh’s visit to Ghana follows his participation in COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland, where President Biden reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to address the climate crisis while mobilising investment capital to build infrastructure that drives sustainable economic recovery. “Ghana is our first stop in Africa after COP26 to meet with partners about President Biden’s Build Back Better World initiative. We will work together to support high-quality, sustainable improvements to address the demand of countries with major infrastructure needs,” said Singh. Singh’s meeting with Bawumia is a continuation of the close bilateral engagement between the Biden and Akufo-Addo Administrations, which includes U.S. Vice President Harris’s meeting at the White House with Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo in September, followed by the recent visit of Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee. Mpohor Kidnapping: Media General to overturn court decision to remand Connect FM presenter
Media General Company Limited, employers of Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson have said they would challenge a decision by a circuit court to detain the Takoradi-based Morning Show Host. Mr Simpson, who works with Connect FM, has been remanded into police custody for two weeks together with another suspect. They are facing the court for publishing false news with the intent to cause fear and alarm, contrary to the Public Order Act, and false publication of news through an electronic device. Attempts by Counsel for the journalist to push for bail failed, as prosecution prayed the court to remand him into police custody. It is reported however, that Media General has been engaging lawyers to overturn the court’s decision. Stephen Kumi, boyfriend of one Stephanie Kumiwaa, the alleged abducted woman, and Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, are to spend two weeks in police custody and will reappear in court on November 16, 2021. The two who pleaded not guilty were arrested in connection with a recent kidnapping case at Mpohor described by the police as fake. Ebo Donkor, the defence counsel for the two, in his plea for bail, said Stephen Kumi must be rather treated as a victim in the case, while Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson must be seen as one who was only doing his work as a journalist. “I must say the two counts are dead on arrival. The three ingredients that must show for count 1 to stand must include the fact that, a statement must be false and must be indeed a publication as well as the intent. For A1, there is no evidence that the information received from the girlfriend was false, and again the police have evidence that he paid some money which the police has removed from their fact sheet.” Background The report of the alleged case of kidnapping involving a 26-year-old woman, Stephanie Kumiwaa, received attention in sections of the media. But a statement from the police said checks at the Mpohor Police District Command indicated that no such case had been reported there.The Police Service thus insisted that the kidnapping story was untrue. Preliminary investigation During interrogation, Stephen Kumi told the police that he met the victim on Facebook, and they started dating. On October 17, 2021, Stephanie called to inform him that she was visiting him but did not show up. However, on October 19, 2021, he received a call from a friend of Stephanie that someone called on Stephanie’s phone number that she had been kidnapped, and the suspected kidnappers demanded a ransom of GH¢2,000.00. Police escorted suspect Stephen Kumi to Mpohor and all efforts to locate the residence, family relations of Stephanie and Sandra for confirmation of the alleged incident proved futile. “The Western Regional Police Command wants to use this opportunity to remind the media that they should cross-check all information from the Command for confirmation before publications are done. Mahama donates GHC100k to Radio Gold to restart operations
Former President John Mahama has donated GHC100,000 to the management of Radio Gold to restart their operations following the return of their operating licenses by the National Communications Authority. The cash donation was reportedly handed over to the management of the station on Wednesday, November 5,2021. On October 12, the NCA announced the restoration of the radio broadcasting authorizations to Radio Gold, XYZ, and 131 others. The license of NDC-affiliated Radio Gold and Radio XYZ were revoked over their refusal to pay operating licence fees and expiration of their licenses. The approval is subject to the applicants attending a sensitisation workshop on the terms and conditions of FM radio broadcasting authorisations. We’re committed to arresting subsidised fertiliser smuggling – Dery
The Minister for Interior Ambrose Dery has urged citizens living in communities across the country’s borders to effectively support and collaborate with the security agencies to help reduce the smuggling of subsidised fertilisers. He similarly appealed to the country’s traditional rulers to assist the security forces to cut down the smuggling of fertilisers out of the country since this would help ensure the successful implementation of Government’s programmes and policies. The Minister, as well, urged the security agencies, especially the Immigration Services to be vigilant in abating the smuggling of fertilisers meant for the Planting for Food and Jobs programme out of the country. Ambrose Dery made these appeal when he was answering a question posed by the MP for South Dayi Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor on steps the Ministry was taking to curb the smuggling of fertilisers meant for the Planting for Food and Job Programme across the borders. He disclosed that the Ministry has identified the causes of the smuggling and shortages and was mapping out better strategies to get fertilisers to farmers across the country directly, which he explained, will help the Ministry to solve the canker of fertiliser smuggling in the border parts of the country.
