A known leading member of the New Patriotic Party in the Navrongo Central constituency of the Upper East Region, Alhaji Abdallah Otito Achuliwor has set the record straight following the report about his intention to contest the 2024 Parliamentary seat under the ticket of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Navrongo Central According to Alhaji, his attention was drawn to the circulation of posters and banners of him in and around the Navrongo Central Constituency, and also on social media supposedly declaring his intention to contest the Navrongo Central parliamentary primaries to represent his beloved NPP in the 2024 general elections. In a press statement issued to the media on January 21, 2022, he said, “No persons or group of persons who have the welfare of our dear NPP at heart will impugn the provisions of our time-tested constitution and flout the guidelines so issued”. “I have neither engaged nor have i have been engaged by, anybody or group on the 2024 parliamentary primaries of our party and so have no knowledge of the activities of the said persons or group”. Unequivocally, I wish to state that I have no knowledge of the source of those posters, nor have I sanctioned the circulation of the same on any platform. I have no knowledge of the said group that is purported to be working for me and wish to caution them to stop their anti-party activities. Without any doubt, this is the work of detractors who do not wish well for the NPP (particularly Navrongo Central) and I would like to send strong caution to the faceless persons or group of persons behind this diabolic agenda to desist from it or I will be compelled to take legal action against persons caught, or properly identified for engaging in these actions. Every true member or supporter of the NPP would be familiar with and respect the constitution and leadership of our beloved party, especially as relates to the recently issued guidelines to regulate the conduct of members (including potential aspirants). Ghana’s Vice President visits Appiatse explosion scene
On Friday, January 21, 2022, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia paid a visit to the scene of the explosion at Appiatse, a town between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region where the disaster happened. According to reports, Dr. Bawumia’s visit is to assess the extent of the disaster and its damages. Whiles addressing a gathering during his visit, Dr. Bawumia said: “We are here, on behalf of the president and the government, to see the extent of this very horrible disaster that has befallen us as a country”. “I have received briefings from the various agencies, the police, the fire service, NADMO.” The Vice President was accompanied on his visit by the National Security Advisor, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Minister for the Interior, Minister of Information and officials of the Mineral Commission. Seventeen people have so far been confirmed dead in the huge explosion. Fifty-nine others were also injured out of the 76 rescued so far. National Investment Bank lays off workers in voluntary redundancy exercise
The National Investment Bank (NIB) has laid off some of its staff through a voluntary retrenchment exercise. The Managing Director of the bank, Mr Samuel Sarpong, on July 2, 2021, announced to the staff that NIB had concluded negotiations with the unions on the redundancy package and gave them a one-week window for interested staff to apply for it between 17 December 2021 and 24 December 2021. All the interested staff were duly paid and have exited the company since 31 December 2021. The redundancy pay, according to Graphic.com.gh, was a pro-rated three-and-a-half months’ salary for each completed year of service. Additionally, each affected staff got a one-month salary in lieu of notice. Also, all their outstanding leave days were commuted to cash and duly paid. Furthermore, employees who had outstanding long service awards as of December 31, 2021, have been sorted out. The management also paid GHS4,000 to each affected staff across the board in appreciation of their service. Each of them was also given GHS2,000 for transportation. Apart from the above payments, the affected staff will receive either two years of medical insurance cover or GHS6,000 in lieu for that purpose. Navrongo: Farmers in Pungu-Telania at risk of losing their crops as Dam keep drying up
Pungu- Telania Dam Farmers in Kasena – Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region said, their crops are dying because of the non-availability of water in the Dam to feed their crops. According to one of the farmers Mr. Godin Atintwi who spoke to this platform yesterday January 20, 2022, he said, because of the disturbing nature, vegetables and some other important crops are becoming scarce commodities in the area. Mr. Godwin who appeared so worried due to the current situation said, the Pungu farmers are noted for supplying vegetables to the people of Navrongo, Upper East region and the country as a whole. According to him, the Dam which was constructed far back somewhere in the 1950s is dried up and cannot take care of farming activities in the dry season. He extends an appeal to Government, the Municipal Assembly, NGOs, Sons and Daughters and well-wishers to come to their aid. Appiatse Explosion: 17 died so far; 59 injured – Gov’t
Seventeen (17) persons have died in a massive explosion that happened at Appiatse, a town between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region yesterday. A total of Fifty-nine (59) persons were injured out of the 76 that have been rescued so far. According to a statement issued by Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah following the tragedy said: “As at 17:00 hours, a total of seventeen (17) people have, sadly, been confirmed dead, and fifty-nine (59) injured persons had been rescued, bringing to seventy-six (76) the number of persons known, so far, to have been affected by the tragedy. “Out of the fifty-nine (59) injured persons, forty-two (42) are receiving treatment and some in critical condition.” “All hospitals within the vicinity are being used to treat injured persons, and an evacuation plan has been activated to move those in critical condition to medical facilities in Accra so they can get the needed assistance.” However, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has launched investigations into the circumstances that led to the explosion of explosives that were being transported to a mine at Apiate, a town between Bogoso and Bawdie in the Western Region. “The investigation will among others help the government to determine whether the regulations covering transportation of explosives were complied with and also what led to the unfortunate tragedy,” a statement issued by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources on Thursday, 20 January 2022 said. The explosion occurred when a truck conveying explosive material for a mining company, a motorcycle, and a third vehicle close to an electronic transformer was involved in an accident leading to the explosion Thursday, 20 January 2022. Engage Universities to assist teachers pursuing sandwich courses- Prof George K. T Oduro
A Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Cape Coast, Prof. George K.T. Oduro has called for the adjustment and realigning the calendar of the trimester system to address the challenge of teachers pursuing sandwich programmes at the Universities as against adopting a semester system at the basic school level to address the challenge. He noted that an engagement between the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, relevant teacher unions and the Universities could realign the calendar within the context of the existing trimester system. Prof Oduro made the comment at the back of the introduction of a semester-based academic calendar for public Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High Schools announced by the GES last week. Among other things, GES said, the new system will ease pressure on teachers, decongest the various schools, and help align academic calendars. However, Prof Oduro called for planning and engaging describing the policy as rushed arguing that there is a lack of support system and will result in learning fatigue. He spoke to Correspondent Prosper Adankai in Bolgatanga, Upper East Regional Capital. A summary of the forthcoming Ghana educational reforms, as outlined by the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service and the National Council for Curriculum Assessment, has revealed that the West African Senior School Certificate Exams (WASSCE), will be replaced with a university entrance exam – with SHS3 final-year students graduating with a diploma credential instead of WASSCE certificate. A sneak-peek at the reform document available to the B&FT showed it proposes that students in SHS 1 will continue to run a common core programme for one year without elective subjects, such as Science, Business, or any Arts programme, until they are in SHS 2. “Graduating to SHS 2 from SHS 1 will however be done through another Common Core Entrance Exam,” the document anticipated. At SHS2, students will have to select either a career-related programme that includes vocational and technical programmes, or high school diploma elective programmes such as science, business and the arts. The document equally said kindergarten, primary, Junior High School and Senior High Schools will all be described as basic schools, with JHS 1,2,3 and SHS1 being referred to as BS 7, 8, 9 and 10 respectively – meaning SHS1 will now be called BS10. Assessment-wise, the document is proposing that all students in JHS1-SHS1 should run a Common Core Programme called CCP which comprises nine subjects: namely Math, Languages, Science, RME, Physical and Health (not examinable) Career Technology, Social Studies, Computing and Creative Art/Design. A new examination called the National Standard Assessment Test (NSAT) will be conducted at Primary 2, 4, 6, and JHS 2, with the Basic Education Certificate Exams (BECE) being replaced by placement exams at JHS3 to enroll pupils into SHS1.
