Togbe Afede XIV, rejects Kennedy Agyapong’s gift
The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong sent a gift to Ho on Friday for Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State as part of the ongoing Yam Festival and it was rejected. This year’s yam festival of the Chiefs and people of Asogli State is being climaxed this weekend under the distinguished patronage of Togbe Afede XIV. The festival started on August 6, 2022 and is expected to end on Sunday, September 11. The one-month festival seeks to highlight unity, reconciliation, stocktaking and development and is also a platform for the annual re-union with the ancestors and the re-affirmation of allegiance by all chiefs and their subjects in the Asogli State to the Agbogbome Stool. Beneficiaries of MTN Ghana Foundation YEEP impacting communities
Beneficiaries of the MTN Ghana Foundation Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Project (YEEP) have begun training more youth in phone repairs within their communities. This comes a year after completing their skills training programme in phone repairs that qualified them for startup tool kits and ‘container’ kiosk at their preferred location to start business. During a visit to some beneficiaries in communities within the Suhum and Nsawam townships of the Eastern region, it was observed that most of the beneficiaries had apprentices at their workstations. In an interview, Mr. Derrick Awartey, who had two apprentices, said he had been so fortunate to participate in the project which provided a sustainable source of livelihood and put him in a better position to help others through apprenticeship. “At first, we sat by our parents but now you know you have a place to go to for something. With the little I get, I am not tempted to engage in any vice or rely on any man for support,” said Ms. Diana Ohene Ansah, another beneficiary. Mr. Ofori Enoch, a Beneficiary with four apprentices also commended MTN Ghana Foundation and its partners for empowering the youth through skills training. With guaranteed source of income, he said, life had become much better as he did not worry about meeting his financial obligations. Mrs. Cynthia Mills, Economic Empowerment Advisor of MTN Ghana Foundation, disclosed that out of the 100 participants selected for training through the various Assemblies, 84 managed to complete the one-month programme. She said there was a plan to scale up the training to include the repair of laptops and tablets to broaden the skill base of beneficiaries. “We are also looking at extending the project to other regions, but we are yet to settle on the regions,” she added. Bawku conflict at its peak– Upper East Regional Minister
The conflict in Bawku and its environs has reached its peak with incidents of attacks and counter-attacks perpetrated on the daily basis, Chairman of the Upper East Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Hon. Stephen Yakubu has said. The disturbances, he noted, posed threat to the future of children in the area, stressing that “Posterity will not forgive all those who contributed in one way or the other to this catastrophe. I am sad to admit is getting out of control.” Addressing this year’s maiden staff meeting of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC), the REGSEC Chair, who is the Regional Minister, reiterated his appeal to sons and daughters of the area to lay down their arms and chart the path of dialogue to resolve the conflict. Apart from the RCC staff, the meeting attracted members of REGSEC and other Heads of Departments and Agencies in the Region, and afforded them the opportunity to deliberate on issues of development. Hon. Yakubu, however, commended the factions in the Doba-Kandiga conflict for their show of maturity in managing the conflict, and gave the assurance that REGSEC would continue to partner with all stakeholders in the area to find a lasting solution to the impasse. He assure residents in and around the Regional capital, Bolgatanga, that REGSEC would work to stem the growing insecurity over the past weeks for residents to go about their daily activities without fear. Touching on other sectors of the economy, the soft-spoken Minister and former Ambassador, said the agricultural sector employed about 80 percent of residents with a comparative advantage in the production of rice, maize, sorghum and groundnuts. Under the Planting for Food and Jobs programme, he said a total of 693,799 bags of NPK fertilizers were received and distributed in 2021, while a total of 280,000 bags had so far been distributed this year. Hon Yakubu attributed the reduction in the quantity of the fertilizers between 2021 and 2022 to the Russian-Ukraine war. On education, he said it was the pivot around which every facet of development evolved, and indicated that for the region to catch up with her peers, the issue of education should be taken seriously. He said the Akufo-Addo-led-government regarded education as a major priority, and therefore introduced the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy which had over the years increased enrollment in public SHSs. He added that the region chalked some marginal improvement in maternal deaths, saying maternal mortality reduced from 24 deaths in 2021 to 15 deaths in 2022 half-year. He said functional CHPS had increased from 87.6 percent in 2021 to 92.7 percent in 2022 half-year, and described the increase as good news to the people of the region. Hon. Yakubu said as part of strategies to increase the number of Medical Doctors in the Region, he charged the Municipal and District Chief Executives to identify and sponsor Medical students within their jurisdictions and bond them to return and serve upon completion of their course. Michy gives conditions as she finally agrees to feature Shatta Wale
Songstress Michy has sent a reply to Shatta Wale that she is open for business, but nothing personal or intimate. This is in reaction to Shatta Wale’s expensive proposal for a collaboration, and for her to return to the Shatta Movement brand. Michy has accepted the deal, but on two conditions she said must be strictly taken into consideration. A/R: Three arrested for allegedly murdering a 15-year-old girl in Konongo
Three persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of Regina Sarfo, a 15-year-old girl at Ahenbrom in Konongo, Ashanti Region. The three suspects are currently assisting the Police, with investigations into the murder of the girl. The body of the girl was found on Thursday, 8 September 2022, dumped in a bush at Ahenbrom, a suburb of Konongo. Forensic examination by crime scene expects was conducted, and the body of the girl was sent to the Stewards Hospital Morgue for autopsy and preservation. The Police Regional Command has since met with the family of the deceased while the Inspector–General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has sympathized with the family on phone. The IGP also assured the family of the necessary support from the Police. Police clinical psychologists have since began offering psychosocial support to the family as investigations still continue.
