MTN Implements Price Increase
Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) has implemented an upward review of its voice and data prices by 15% for most of its products and services for both pre-paid and post-paid customers. The new pricing takes effect today, 28th November 2023. The price review impacts Voice, SMS, and Data as well as Fiber Broadband and Fixed Wireless Access (4G Router/Turbonet) customers. The review has become necessary due to increased operational costs. The review will allow MTN Ghana to continue to make the investments required to sustain its business going forward. Explaining the reason for the increase, the Chief Commercial Officer for MTN Ghana, Mr. Noel Kojo-Ganson, indicated that it was due to market pressures: “We are very mindful of the challenging economic conditions and the increasing cost of inputs for our business. Nigerian Super Star Rema cancel shows to tackle his health
Nigerian musician Rema has made the decision to cancel all of his scheduled shows in December in order to prioritize his health. Rema took to Instagram to explain that he had neglected his well-being due to constant touring and recognized the need to recuperate. Poll conducted by Global Info sees Mahama floors Dr. Bawumia
Results of a recent poll conducted by Global Info Analytics, focusing on seven constituencies with significant Zongo Communities, indicate that former President John Dramani Mahama has a substantial lead over Vice President John Dramani Mahama in the 2024 presidential election. The poll, which was published on November 29, 2023, shows that 73.1% of respondents voted for Mr. Mahama from the opposition National Democratic Congress, while his closest rival, Dr. Bawumia from the ruling New Patriotic Party, polled at 21.2%. The third position was divided between independent candidate Alan Kyerematen and undecided respondents, who both received 2.5%. Other candidates such as Dr. Sam Ankrah, Kofi Akpaloo, Kwabena Andrews, and Hassan Ayariga each received minimal support, ranging from 0.0% to 0.1%. Additionally, 0.4% of respondents indicated support for a different candidate. The poll surveyed constituencies including Madina, Ashaiman, Ablekuma Central, Ayawaso East, Ayawaso North, Ayawaso Central, and Asawase, with a sample size of 2,745. Ofori-Atta unhappy with Parliament’s rejection of 2024 budget

2024 budget not approved, Speaker declares
The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has stated that the 2024 budget has not yet been approved. Contrary to claims that it has been passed, Bagbin explains that the budget statement and economic policy are still being reviewed by the house. Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta had previously announced that the budget had been approved after a walkout by the majority. However, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, raised the issue during a correction of votes and proceedings, prompting Bagbin to intervene. Bagbin disagreed with the claims of approval, stating that the process did not reach a logical conclusion. As a result, he rescheduled the budget for consideration next week. The Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Ibrahim Ahmed, appealed to Bagbin to immediately consider the budget instead of delaying it. There was also debate over the absence of the majority MPs during the proceedings. Mr. Emmanuel Wilson Junior, the Chief Crusader of the Crusaders Against Corruption, has called for Kissi Agyebeng to recuse himself from his position as Special Prosecutor in order to protect what remains of his reputation. This suggestion comes after another failed attempt by the special prosecutor to successfully prosecute an alleged state criminal. The Accra High Court recently nullified a report implicating former Commissioner of the Customs Division at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Colonel Kwadwo Damoah, and Joseph Adu Kyei, a former Deputy Commissioner, for providing favorable tax treatment to Labianca Company Limited. The accused individuals filed a lawsuit contending that the report lacked merit and harmed their reputations. The court ruled in their favor, imposing a fine on the Special Prosecutor’s Office (OSP) and restraining further investigation into the matter. The OSP, however, maintained that it acted within its mandate and rejected the court’s decision. Mr. Emmanuel Wilson Junior criticized the OSP’s zero-win rate and accused it of vilifying innocent people on behalf of paymasters. Export and Import Regulations 2023, offends clear provisions of the IMF Bailout Agreement–Mahama Ayariga
Mahama Ayariga, the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has criticized the Proposed Restrictions on Importation of Selected Strategic Products as it contradicts Ghana’s commitments under the IMF Bailout Agreement. According to Ayariga, the Export and Import Regulations, 2023, violate the provisions stated in the international agreement and show a disregard for the stipulations outlined in the IMF Country Report No. 23/168 issued in May 2023. Ayariga also questioned the level of communication between the Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, suggesting a lack of coordination within the government. He further claimed that the NPP Government is confused about the country’s economic direction and financial management, and unable to uphold its commitments to the IMF. The Upper East Regional NDC women wing led by Fawzia Yakubu has said, the pronouncement made by the Upper East Regional Minister Stephen Yakubu, is a clear manifestation of his ignorance of that viable policy proposal just like Dr. Bawumia himself. “Traditionally, which farming community(s) farms or go to the farm at night? Minister, Stephen Yakubu, questioned the suitability of the policy for farming communities and suggested that it could threaten conjugal stability in those areas. Mr. Yakubu made these remarks during a festival in Sakote, as seen in a video by ApexnewsGh “The vice president is saying that he understands the region. He says that this 24-hour economy, my brothers, when we work in the farms and we are tired in the night we have to sleep with our wives. “We have to be with our wives. In the night you want us to go and be farming and then people will come and take our wives away?” the minister questioned amidst shouts of no from his audience. The Upper East Regional NDC women wing have sighted a viral video, and in it is the holidaying UER minister, Yakubu (Hon), making commentary on the proposed 24-hour economy by the tried and tested NDC flagbearer and president in waiting – H.E. John Dramani Mahama, he sought to relegate women role in that visionary proposal as “sex tools”. He is heard quoting the vice president as saying, “The vice president says he understands the region, he says this 24hr economeez aee my brothers when we work in our farms and we are tired in the night we have to sleep with our wives oooo! We have to be with our wives, ooo..in the night u want us to go farming and people would come and take our wives away?..” ha? Was it made out of genuine hypocrisy or ignorance? It’s not surprising because it’s the same minister who commissioned an empty building under 1D1F in Bolga municipality at Yorogo in the same area around the new abattoir and told us they were now going to shop for the equipment but already they’ve trained staff. The question then is, which equipment did they use to train them? granted, they even did. We hereby want to set the record straight; the 24-hour economy policy is not gender specific or gender discriminatory, whereby it’s only men that would be working at night. It’s a policy with opportunities for all and aimed at economic growth and job opportunities for all. Both Dr. Bawumia and himself have lived, schooled, and worked in the UK, then led by a Monarch Queen where women are given equal opportunities in the economy irrespective of time. The minister seeks to create an impression as though it’s only men or husbands that farm. However, its trite knowledge that both men and women do farm. So we then ask, would he be taken away if his wife also decides to work at night? Granted, she farms at night? Women in this part of our world especially at countryside since time in memorial do sell basic needs (kerosene, spices, beverages, and even basic first aid medications) all from their homes irrespective of time and season hence, they are always prepared for greater economic opportunities if granted and need to be encouraged not discouraged. The same source confirms that it’s the highest in 10 years (2012 -2022) Our expectations were that, due to the everchanging dynamics at the workplace, which women have to cope with by combining, running the homes, and working at the same time, Dr. Bawumia through the regional minister should have rather used the opportunity to advocate for women and mother friendly environments to be incorporated in to the policy to enable them give out their best towards economic growth but not to relegate them as “sex tools”. The 24-hour economy policy gives women the opportunities to run home during the day and work at night to augment home incomes. They need to be told that not all night shifts require on-site physical presence but can equally work from home depending on their schedules. As a former ambassador to the kingdom of Morocco, he is very much aware of how beneficial the 24-hour economy is with reference to the contributions the Marrakech Night Market and Casablanca city brings to the Kingdom economy. Also, he knows well-paid jobs apart from the agricultural sector are jobs from 9 pm to 6 am in the Kingdom of Morocco. Both lived, schooled and worked in the UK and benefited from the 24-hour economy, as narrated by Dr. Bawumia, how he drove taxi while schooling at same time.
