A private legal practitioner, Kwame Aning Gyeabour, has taken legal action against the Chief Justice, the Judicial Secretary, and the General Legal Council (GLC) by filing a case of contempt at the Supreme Court. The lawsuit revolves around a circular reportedly issued by the GLC instructing all courts not to grant Gyeabour an audience. According to the Plaintiff, the circular issued by the GLC, under the direction of the Chief Justice and the Judicial Secretary, was an unlawful act that deprived him of his rights. Gyeabour filed the suit on February 26, 2024, seeking the Court to hold the Respondents accountable for their actions by sentencing them to prison. The motion for Contempt, filed by Edward Sam Crabbe of Crabbe, Crabbe & Co., legal counsel for the applicant, specifically requests the Court to commit and sentence the Chief Justice, the Chairman of the GLC, and the Judicial Secretary to prison for contempt of the Superior Courts of Ghana. EC Ready to Conduct By-Election for Ejisu Constituency Following MP’s Demise
The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has announced its readiness to conduct a by-election for the Ejisu Constituency in the Ashanti region following the passing of Member of Parliament, John Kumah. The news of Dr. Kumah’s death has deeply affected Parliament, with Deputy Finance Minister and MP for Atiwa East, Mrs. Abena Osei-Asare, mourning uncontrollably upon hearing the news. The Commission has thirty days to conduct a by-election in ordinary circumstances, but in the case of a death, they have sixty days. Haruna Iddrisu Accuses Speaker Alban Bagbin of Constitutional Violations
