In a press conference held on Monday, 25 September 2023, former Trades Minister, Alan Kyerematen, expressed his belief that what Ghana needs at this moment is not a new political party, but rather a new leader. Apexnewsgh.com report

He announced his resignation from the governing New Patriotic Party and declared his intention to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 Presidential election.

Mr. Kyerematen declared that the concept of an independent candidate becoming the President of Ghana, although unconventional, would represent a groundbreaking and transformative development in the country’s political history. He cited successful examples of this model from Benin and other political jurisdictions in Africa.

Given the current divisive political climate in Ghana, Mr. Kyerematen believes that an independent candidate as President would serve as a nonpartisan and trustworthy mediator among different political parties, fostering healing and reconciliation within the nation’s body politic.

He stated that, in his capacity as an independent president, he would appoint ministers and other government officials from various political parties as well as individuals who are apolitical but have a proven track record of success in their respective fields.

He emphasized that what Ghana currently needs is not a new political party, but rather a new leader who can bring vision and direction to the nation. He highlighted that great nations are created through the leadership of visionary individuals, rather than relying solely on political parties.

To support his argument, he referenced renowned leaders from around the world, including George Washington and Abraham Lincoln from the United States, Winston Churchill from Great Britain, Mahatma Gandhi from India, Lee Kuan Yew from Singapore, Deng Xiaoping from China, and Dr. Kwame Nkrumah from Ghana.

Mr. Kyerematen stressed that electing an independent candidate as president and establishing a government of national unity would not only promote harmony within the legislature, but also facilitate the approval and implementation of government programmes and projects.
