The Executive Secretary of the Upper East Regional Peace Council, Mr. Ali Anankpieng, has emphasized the importance of comprehensive and balanced reporting on conflict-related issues. Apexnewsgh report

Speaking at a two-day training exercise for journalists in the region, Anankpieng stressed that reporters must gather information from all necessary angles to produce rich and balanced stories.

“To write about conflict, you need to know all the factors involved, from economic, historical, social, and political perspectives. All must be analyzed to provide a clear understanding of the conflict,” Anankpieng explained.

He highlighted the significance of understanding the history and context of conflicts, such as chieftaincy and land disputes. Anankpieng encouraged journalists to conduct thorough research, consult archives, and engage directly with affected communities to gain a deeper understanding of the issues.

When asked about the role of journalists in resolving conflicts, Anankpieng emphasized that their contribution cannot be overstated. “Journalists report and inform the public, helping to combat ignorance that can escalate conflicts. By providing accurate and comprehensive information, journalists can empower the public to make informed comments and avoid inflammatory statements.”

The training, organized by the Upper East Regional Peace Council in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) under the Preventing Violent Extremism through Social Accountability (POVETSA) project II, aimed to enhance journalists’ capacity for conflict-sensitive reporting. The project is funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

By equipping journalists with the skills and knowledge to report responsibly, the Upper East Regional Peace Council and its partners hope to promote peaceful conflict resolution and prevent violence extremism in the region.
