In a surprising turn of events, Speaker Alban Bagbin found himself compelled to adjourn Parliament indefinitely, highlighting the challenges of legislative governance amid a hung Parliament. Apexnewsgh reports
The move came after the absence of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) members, who had initially requested a recall of Parliament but failed to appear when the time came.
As Bagbin addressed the issue, he pointed out that the Business Committee was unable to convene and prepare the necessary reports for the House. With NPP members absent, the chamber stood mostly empty, leading to a stark and untenable situation where no business could be conducted. “Without the Business Committee’s report, there is no authority to introduce new matters for consideration,” he stated, underscoring the procedural roadblocks the House faced.
Recognizing the pressing challenges confronting the nation, Bagbin acknowledged that constant adjournments weren’t conducive for effective governance. Hence, he made the difficult decision to adjourn the meeting indefinitely, asserting the need for more robust participation from all members to ensure the House could function smoothly.
Despite being a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bagbin remains committed to upholding the principles of parliamentary democracy and good governance.
His relentless efforts to keep Parliament operational, even under strained circumstances, reflect his dedication to serving the interests of the country. As Parliament continues to grapple with its operational hurdles, Bagbin’s leadership will be pivotal in navigating these turbulent waters.
