The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety of journalists during the upcoming 2024 General Elections. Apexnewsgh reports
In a meeting held at the Police Headquarters in Accra on November 20, 2024, Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare emphasized the crucial role the media plays in this year’s elections, underscoring the need for protection and support to facilitate their responsibilities as the fourth estate.
Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democratic excellence, attributed to the effective collaboration between institutions like the Police and the media, was highlighted by Dr. Dampare.
To bolster media security, the Police introduced liaison officers for all media houses nationwide, serving as direct links between the Police and media establishments to address security concerns and enhance journalist safety.
Dr. Dampare called for collective efforts to make the 2024 elections a landmark in Ghana’s democratic history, marked by peace, security, and order. A dedicated toll-free contact, secured in collaboration with telecommunications companies, will be available for the public to share information with the Police.
Recognizing the media’s influential role in shaping public discourse, Dr. Dampare urged journalists to maintain accuracy in their election coverage, avoiding misinformation that could undermine national stability.
He expressed confidence that the measures in place will enable media personnel to work without fear, regardless of location.
