Energy Minister Exposes Alleged $500K Fraud in ECG Equipment Auction

Ghana’s Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has blown the whistle on alleged fraudulent activities within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), particularly in the handling of critical electrical equipment. Apexnewsgh reports

Jinapor revealed that ECG has repeatedly failed to clear essential electrical supplies from the port, resulting in significant financial losses.

One shocking case involved a $500,000 container of electrical equipment that was left uncleared and subsequently auctioned off at a much lower price. Jinapor disclosed that someone bought the container at auction for 100,000 cedis and then resold it to ECG for $300,000. This incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for an investigation into ECG’s procurement and auctioning processes.

Jinapor described the situation as unacceptable and vowed to put an end to such practices. “It will stop. And I mean it will stop. Whatever it takes to stop that, no matter how unpopular that may be, we must take action,” he stated.

The Energy Minister also revealed that ECG currently has 3,000 containers stuck at the ports, accumulating a demurrage cost of GHS 1.5 billion due to the company’s failure to clear them on time. He attributed this to “frivolous procurements,” stating that some of the procured items will last for ten years, while others will expire in five years.

To address these concerns, Jinapor has established a committee to investigate ECG’s procurement practices under the Akufo-Addo administration.

The committee’s preliminary reports indicate that ECG’s former management did not follow proper procurement processes, suggesting “massive rot” within the company.
