Some residents of Kandiga, a community in the Kassena-Nankana Municipality of the Upper East Region are fleeing the town after some reported cases of shooting which claimed three lives.
The residents were spotted seated at the Customs checkpoint on the Navrongo-Bolgatanga highway with their luggage while many were seen with there luggage on tricycles and monkey carts moving towards Bolgatanga and Navrongo to seek refuge.
The people of Doba and Kandiga have a long-standing conflict over land dispute, which led to a twelve-hour curfew imposed on the two communities by the Municipal Security Council for the past months.
Some residents who spoke to apexnewsgh.com as they prepared to leave the community, said their lives were in danger and they could not guarantee their safety in the area, hence their decision to flee.
A resident, Richmond Ayesiya who came an account of what happened, said while at home, at about 9pm on Saturday, he heard gunshots, and the next day, some houses were burnt and people killed in the Kandiga community.
According to him, even though some members of the community complained to the security personnel stationed in the community to ensure peace, no attention was given to their complain.
“They didn’t mind us, and after the third complain, the Soldiers told us that they had only one car, so they cannot go there, they are waiting for their Commander to bring a car before they can go there, while the burning was ongoing,” he alleged.
Mr Ayesiya said “We are pleading with the government to help us. We need peace, the curfew is restricting our movement.”
Apexnewsgh.com observed that shops and houses within the Kandiga community were locked and the community was practically deserted while a combined team of Police and Military personnel were stationed in the Kandiga township.
The Kassena-Nankana Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Francis Agyare, disclosed to the media that three persons were killed, and 10 houses burnt across the two communities.
He said eleven people were also arrested in connection with the incident, and some items, including guns and carriages were retrieved from them.
Explaining the cause of the incident, the Police Commander said a 23 year old man from Kandiga but was allied to the Chief of Doba was killed by people believed to come from Kandiga.
He said the conflict initially started as one between the Doba and Kandiga people, but now appeared to be a conflict between the people of Kandiga themselves, but indicated that the situation was under control and calm had returned to the area.
