Renewed violence has hit Bawku, a region in northern Ghana, leaving several people dead and injured. The violence, which began with a confrontation between police and some youth in the market, has also resulted in the destruction of property, including the private residence of Member of Parliament Mahama Ayariga, which was allegedly set ablaze. President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the violence, emphasizing that his government is committed to restoring peace in the troubled area. Speaking at the Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy on April 11, 2025, President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to maintaining peace and security nationwide.
The President expressed confidence in the mediation process initiated by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, which brings together key stakeholders to chart a roadmap towards peace. “We have triggered the Otumfuo mediation process, which has all the stakeholders to ensure a roadmap towards peace,” he stated. The Asantehene has assured that the process will resume upon his return from a brief visit abroad.
President Mahama also stressed that his administration will thoroughly investigate all allegations of criminality, vowing to pursue perpetrators regardless of their identity. “We will take all allegations of crime seriously and trigger our security service investigation machinery to go after criminals, no matter who they are,” he added.
The Bawku conflict has been ongoing for decades, with the region experiencing persistent instability. President Mahama has made it a priority to address the issue, emphasizing the need for collective action and cooperation from all stakeholders to achieve lasting peace and development in the region.
His administration has pledged to support peace-building initiatives and ensure stability in the area.
