Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially been sworn into office by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Tuesday, bringing an exciting chapter to a constituency that has seen its fair share of electoral turmoil.
Prior to Aubynn’s oath of office, the Minority Caucus made a dramatic exit from the chamber in protest. The walkout was sparked by the Speaker’s refusal to grant a request from Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annor Dompreh, to deliver a statement before the ceremony commenced. This act of dissent highlighted the heightened tensions within Parliament, setting a dramatic backdrop for the day’s proceedings.
Aubynn’s ascension to Parliament follows a fiercely contested rerun election in the Ablekuma North constituency. This rerun became necessary after the Electoral Commission (EC) annulled the results of the original December 2024 election due to serious allegations of electoral irregularities, including the use of unauthenticated pink sheets.
The EC’s decision to withhold final results stemmed from formal complaints over unsigned result forms, discrepancies in vote tallies, and procedural violations during the collation process. These challenges led to a rerun conducted across 19 polling stations earlier this month, where Aubynn emerged victorious with a narrow margin of 34,090 votes against her opponent from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Akua Afriyie, who received 33,881 votes.
Aubynn’s victory not only adds to the NDC’s strength in Parliament but also marks a significant shift in a constituency that has historically leaned towards the NPP. As she takes her seat, her win symbolizes a new political landscape. Further, it invigorates the NDC as it seeks to solidify its presence in regions once considered strongholds for the opposition.
