Tensions have been mounting in recent weeks as the Ministry for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation continues its standoff with MultiChoice Ghana over DSTV subscription fees.
With the sharp appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi, government officials have insisted that pay-TV operators adjust their prices accordingly. However, the debate over how to best protect consumers without unfairly disadvantaging service providers has taken center stage in the national conversation.
Amidst these discussions, Wonder Madilo, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team, has made a public appeal to Minister Samuel Nartey George. Speaking on Accra based satation on Monday, September 8, 2025, Madilo urged the Minister to consider a pay-as-you-consume policy as a practical and balanced solution.
“I think the government should also look for another alternative in terms of the charging. It will be difficult for them to get DSTV to do a lot of the things asking for because the law says that the government of Ghana must protect the consumer, but that protection of the consumer is not to say that the other company will lose. There should be a middle ground…But I am also suggesting that the government of Ghana should be insisting on pay-as-you-consume, not the blanket payment,” Madilo emphasized.
He argued that such a model would give subscribers better value for money, while also safeguarding the interests of companies like MultiChoice.
In a related development, the National Communications Authority (NCA) has announced a stakeholder meeting scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2025. The meeting, to be chaired by Minister Samuel Nartey George, aims to review DSTV pricing and seek a consensus among all parties involved.
As the nation awaits the outcome of the meeting, many are watching to see if the pay-as-you-consume model will gain traction as a fair compromise in the ongoing dispute.
